I picked up a Go and No Go gauge from Pacific Tool for a 6.5 Creedmoor...going to build a Kelblys action with Proof Barrel with the Bugnet system so I needed one.......so When the Go and No Go showed up I thought I would check my Ruger American Predator...Bolt closes on the NO GO Gauge..so NOW i am wondering if the Gun has excessive headspace even though it shoot sub .5 minute, or the gauge is off....

SO anyone have some ideas or recommendations? My buddy has a defiant action with Proof barrel...was going to see if it would close on NO GO Gauge on his gun....

The difference between a GO and a NO GO gauge is about the thickness of a piece of scotch tape. If your cases do not show any signs of case head separation I wouldn't worry about it. I have a couple ARs that have failed the NO GO gauge and I shoot the shit out of them.

Between JGS, Manson and PTG, and others I suspect, it is not difficult to find .002 diffierence in comparing their respective No-Go gauges as well as Go. It's possible to chamber at Go plus .008 with PTG and be +- .004 past a Manson No-Go for example. Closing on a field gauge would make be nervous though. Do you have light primer spikes? I'm a little surprised there is not a slight bulge near the brass' base . I saw a wildly out of headspaced tolerance 6.5 Grendel, easily closed on a Field Gauge, with ejected brass that looked like a 6.5 Grendel belted mag. Could it become the next hot wildcat? 1.5 extra grain? Nice!

I’ll have to check when I get home.... need to check gauges on another rifle to see if it’s a gauge issue or rifle issue. How would I measure the gauge to check for accuracy... I tried to measure overall length but the no go measured less than the go gauge.

If you reload you are probably fine. But in general, the case head separation issue is only and issue if the case head is not supported from a short shoulder not really an issue for a chamber that is reamed deep.

Well I rechecked my Gauges, and I must have missed something the first time....the gun does indeed still close on the NO GO but DOES NOT close on the Field gauge so that is good news...my son has the exact same Ruger American Predator and His gun DOES not close on the NO GO....I guess I should not be surprised on a factory mass produced rifle....better news is my Prefit Preferred Barrel gets delivered tomorrow!! Too bad I won't be home to get it though, since i will be out ELK HUNTING!!! Sweetness!!!

remedied the issue....installed a profit Preferred Barrel....26 inch Hvy Palma...will head out tomorrow to break it in....it is headspace correctly now....Does not close on the no go.....sometimes you just gotta do it yourself....
