Ruger M77 Barrel Nut?

I have a 30-06 Ruger M77 that I really like, and I have been thinking about putting a new 6.5cm barrel on it. I have heard that all rugers rifle actions use the same thread of 16 TPI. Since people are offering barrels for the RPR or Ruger American rifles that use a barrel not system, can i use these same barrels on my M77 action?

I asked Black Hole Weaponry as they make these pre-fit barrels for rugers, but said i would need to get my own barrel nut as they do not make them. Would a barrel nut like this one work? http://pacifictoolandgauge.com/ruge...r-american-barrel-nut-4140-1-x-16-2b-tpi.html

I want to make sure this is going to work before I order a barrel that I cannot use. Is there anything i need to be aware of or are missing in this barrel swap?

Also the 30-06 and 6.5cm use the same size bolt face, so the action and bolt will work with no changes needed to make the switch, correct? It will just be a long action shooting the 6.5cm, but the magazine, bolt, action etc… should all work I believe.

Arent the tenon lengths different between a m77 and an american? Its been awhile since I redid my m77 mark ll but I felt that an american was shorter than an m77 but that was quite awhile back and its only my recollection of stuff I never wrote down. I get that the nut allows you a little wiggle room in that but I would contact whoever sells them to ask first. I am very interested in this as well. Yes, the M77 is a 16TPI, and I'd love to swap out the barrel on a short Hawkeye to make it a 6.5. That would be a sweet rig to hunt with , but the current 308 barrel is a 16" tack driver, so I'm not in a hurry.
Make sure the extractor doesn't cause interference. There may be a difference in the chamber / tenon geometry. The 77 has a Mauser style claw extractor while the American has a savage style.

I don't believe the M77 uses a barrel nut. The M77 is pretty much a copy of a Mauser action and the barrel screws directly to the action. I am in no way a gunsmith, but if they use the same barrels you may be good to go.

Well neither do rem or tikka or the american or any other variant that is adding barrel nut set ups these days. Thats what this is about, adding a nut to one.

The barrel on the m77 has a cut made in it to allow for the claw extractor.
It must be indexed to the correct clock position for it work.
Since the barrel has to be indexed, having a barrel nut is pointless

I want to bump this back up. Has anyone tried this? or does anyone know if this will actually work? would hate to order a barrel and find out that this isn't possible. What I'm thinking is order a Ruger American barrel, and barrel nut, then fit it on a Ruger m77mkII action.

The barrel nut that I make/stock here will work on a prefit barrel for an M77. The barrel will screw on the front of an M77 too. It's not necessarily laid out to do so, I found out that it was compatible purely by dumb luck after someone called and asked me. I had absolutely no call for barreling work on an M77, it was just happenstance.

Did you check out and measure a Ruger m77 mkII action and verify it is the same dimensionally as a ruger american action? Thus ruger american barrels will work fine on an M77?

Or does a person need to get a barrel made for a M77 action but with no shoulder, then use a savage/ruger barrel nut?

Thought i would post an update for anyone interested. First off I would highly recommend McGowen Barrel to anyone looking for a new barrel, especially one for a M77. I called numerous places looking for a barrel and they were the only one interested or cared enough to help me. I talked with Dan and he set me up with a barrel and nut. It turned out great, and has been shooting amazing. Doing load development right now, but this is the first rifle i have owned where a 5 shot group looked like only 2 shots hit the paper.

Essentially for the Ruger M77 MKII (I also believe the Hawkeys are the same) can use the same barrel and barrel nut as a Ruger American. McGowen has there own barrel nut and wrench, as the factory Ruger barrel nut is smooth. I made my own wrench from a savage style nut wrench. But everything installed and worked so good I ordered a couple more Mcgowen barrels.
