Running Tikka CTR in factory stock?

Hi guys,

I see that most guys who buy the Tikka CTR typically ditch the stock for a chassis (I’ve seen a ton of KRG Bravo’s+CTR’s for example). The thing is, I would like to compete a bit and gain some experience before I spend the money on a chassis. This way I can make a purchase based on experience and understanding of my preferences versus purchasing a budget chassis and upgrading later. Is this a reasonable way to go about it? Or am I overestimating the viability of the factory tikka stock in a competition? Realistically, I would probably shoot it stock for a year or so before upgrading to an MDT ACC or Whiskey 3. If shooting it factory is going to be a major hindrance then I would purchase a Bravo now.

Interested to hear your thoughts.

The biggest thing here is: do you fit the Original Equipment stock ?
There are little low cost things you can do you do yourself if you’re a little bit handy, ie.: add the wider “Varmit” forend, change the grip, add a pic rail or Arca rail for a bipod, etc. to make the stock more functional.
If you fit the stock, buy ammo, get trigger time, build up your brass stash and above all else have fun.

In my opinion this is more about preference than functionality. Like CaptNemo said, does the equipment fit you? The only way you will be able to know is to continue to shoot. Attend some matches (if that is your goal) and practice with the rifle and gear you have. You will find that most shooters will be more than happy to let you test out their equipment. Gear will constantly change. Just when you think you have the perfect chassis or rear bag or bipod... someone will come out with something new and you'll have to have it.

The factory tikka stock will not hold you back in terms of accuracy or enjoying the rifle. I have a 308 T3 and a 6.5 CTR T3X. Both out of the box, no barrel break in bullshit, printed clover leaf groups with factory match ammo. I changed to a Manners stock because I simply wasn't comfortable behind the rifle. I wanted more meat to the stock ... larger grip, a larger (adjustable) cheek rest and something that felt solid while I was behind it.

So, will the factory stock hinder your ability to shoot a match or print a nice group? Nope. Will you gain much by switching to a Bravo or MDT? That's for you to decide.

I didnt, and still dont have the funds to swap out my CTRs stock. I have a old picatinny keymod rail and a tripod mount bolted to mine. Its not perfect but you can make it work if you need it too.

Yeah you will not hear a lot of love for the factory stock around here but the only real drawback is the lack of cheek adjustment. I just put one on. You can also add spacers for length of pull adjustment.

The fiberglass polymer composite is stiff and won't hold you back.

Really like the looks of your rifle. I have one iike that in stainless ordered. I was thinking of using it as a hunting rifle. Two questions:
1) Quick detach bipod? good idea, bad idea? suggestions?
2) I have an "extra Kahles K624i scope" taken off my RPR in 6.5Creedmoor when I sold it. Too much scope to hunt with, spot and stalk, ground blinds , no extreme back pack hunts.

Thanks!!!

Same boat as the OP. I want to get better at general shooting and things and understand what works/doesn't work for me until I go and shell out for a new chassis. I love my Tikka T3x CTR but with high cheek bones I've been scouring the interwebs for something to give me about 0.7 inches of cheek rise. Yes there's a million options around strapping a triad stock pack on it, to drilling in holes in the stock to attach a cheek riser. None of those I was really a fan of so I kept scouring and scouring and finally came across -

Now I can get the perfect cheek weld for a few bucks to get it printed out, since the CTR already has a hole on the top to install the attachment, my stock is more or less untouched.

Added a limbsaver recoil pad, and a bipod and everything is feeling great. I was really close to just pulling the trigger and getting the bravo stock, but went the value route for now. ~$37 for limbsaver and a few bucks to have a buddy print out the cheek riser mod.

I have a QD UTG Bipod, yes not a nice fancy harris one, but I haven't had any issues with it. Had it from my AR-15, and attached a swivel stud to picatinny rail attachment that came with it so I can swap the bipod from the AR to the Tikka. Works great.

Resurrecting an old post, but do you happen to have an updated link for that cheek riser? The thingiverse link is dead...
