Rust in my barrel, looking for source...

Hello I apologize for the length, but I wanted to be detailed.
I have a Rem 700P that is about 12 years old. I have ran it suppressed for the last year with a Thompson Machine 30Ti. Maybe 200-300 rounds over that time, 30-40rds per session. I always removed the suppressor after shooting. July of this year(2020) I decided to make a Form 1 suppressor that I could designate to the 700, and leave on all the time. After ATF approval in hand I did just that.
At that time I also switched from using Mobile 1 oil for coating the internals of the suppressor, to Accuracy Oil from Modern Spartan Systems. A few days ago (10/13/2020) I was looking at the end of the suppressor and saw brown build up. I took it apart and rust had formed inside several of the stainless steel baffles, there was also a strong ammonia odor. I immediately took it apart to find some pretty severe pitting that had already occurred on the baffles. I then put a camera down the bore of the barrel and discovered this horrific sight. Littered throughout the barrel starting at the crown and going back about 12-16" are 12-18 sites like this.

The last time I put a camera in bore was 6/14/2020, right before I put the suppressor on, and switched the oil product used for internals. I still have the pictures from that and was able to verify dates and condition.

I have not shot this since I observed the damage and can not say if the accuracy was effected on the 700. It has shot 0.50-0.75MOA its whole life, so I will take it out and see. Judging by the condition of the crown I am not optimistic that it will still shoot. The only cartridge this barrel has seen is Fed SMK 168g factory loads.

In addition to the above- I just purchased a 6.5Grendel Howa that I picked up Friday10/9/2020. I shot it on Monday 10/12/2020 40rds(Hornady Black 123g) breaking in barrel. I used my Thompson machine 30Ti suppressor, lubricated with the Modern Spartan Systems Accuracy Oil. I didn't take the suppressor off until later that night. 10/13/2020 the same day I discovered the rust on the 700 I also checked this barrel, and sure enough there were little brown burr piles that looked like rust. I Immediately put patches down it and a nylon brush to break it up and push it out. It would not come out so I fired five rounds then cleaned. After more patches and nylon brush this was what was left behind in several spots.

After tending to the barrel I checked the titanium mono-core baffle and I did not see any rust on there, however the stainless steel spacer did have surface rust showing.

My thought is that the 700 barrel started looking like the Howa, back in July, and progressively got worse over time until I recently discovered it.

My questions are :

Has anyone used the Modern Spartan Accuracy oil and experienced similar issues?

Does it seem like the oil is a likely source?

I am VERY frustrated, on my 700 I recently upgraded stock(Foundation), trigger(Huber), glass(Athlon ETR), to then discover a barrel that looks like the surface of the moon, which a few months ago looked smooth as glass.
I will be reaching out to Modern Spartan today to discuss with them.
Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Not heard of this product till now. I took a look on their site and do not see a MSDS form for it or any of their products, I'd suggest contacting them and request it.

Hate to hear about this

if you got the "starter kit" check and see if you used one of the solvents instead of the oil

the time where you smelled an ammonia smell seems suspicious IMO

I went to their "site", looked for and then searched for Material Safety Data Sheet for their stuff, nada

something not right about this

Mmany times that pitting will happen if you do not completely remove the bore cleaner from the barrel before putting oil in it.
Why are you smelling ammonia? where is it coming from? What are you using to clean the barrel?

It could be from rain, I bought a brand new 700 that was new old stock and there was rust and pitting in the barrel, shot just fine.

I started cleaning after each range session. Then heard people would waiti to clean until accuracy degradation. It was in that time that this occurred. It was also a chrome mol barrel vs stainless which would probably take the lack of cleaning better.
I think it would have been okay with the exception of shooting in the rain and putting away after air drying.

It’s been about 2 years since that happened and I have not seen it repeat with many different barrels, and using the MSS product line. The faint ammonia smell is present after shooting suppressed.

I do use a light coat of mobile 1 synthetic on the outside of the monocore. Just enough so that it slides in and out with ease after cleaning. I also started cleaning with a green scrub pad and Dawn platinum after each use. That is more for consistency, always starting with a clean barrel, and suppressor. I used to use too much oil and get a puff of white-ish smoke on first $ second shot. Since then I’ve found a good amount and don’t notice that anymore.

In case anyone was curious. I’m about 99% sure this was due to not cleaning after shooting in light rain.

I've said it before and I'll say it again..."Even though the barrels are made out of stainless steel they are not made out of surgical stainless. Put it away dirty for x amount of time and I will guarantee that pitting/corrosion will start." How much time? Too hard to answer that. Where you live/store the gun, type of ammo/powder shot thru it etc...there are a lot of variables.

Even if you cannot clean do a good cleaning job....and you have to do it down the road sometime...at least put something in the bore. I typically put Hoppe's #9 in the barrel. It will protect as good as any oil and will always be cleaning to some extent. Never had a problem with corrosion and using Hoppe's. Otherwise CLP is a good oil type product but doesn't really do any cleaning.

Just based on what you posted... the oil/cleaner you are using possibly isn't doing what it's suppose to be doing.
