S.A.C. Rem 700 260 build pictures

Shooters, I just finished up a build for a customer on Tuesday of last week. The customer wanted a heavy barreled 27" 260 Remington set up for long range target and competition. Here are the specs.

Customer Supplied Remington 700 with HS Precision stock.

Rem 700 action, stress relieved, action and bolt fully blueprinted, bolt finished lapped to ensure full contact.

Krieger 1-8.5 M40 finished at 27" from bolt face, Chambered in .260 Remington and throated to customer's supplied spec. M40'ish crown. Barrel was sand blasted and wire wheeled for a matte stainless finish.

HS Precision stock has been skim bedded and the barrel channel opened up by hand to fit the new barrel plus .040" gap.

A tactical bolt knob conversion has been performed. For the bolt knob I used Randy Cain's new 1/2 Hex bolt knob.

The customer wanted me to just build it and ship it out, but I could not let it out of the shop with machining marks on the bolt and action. So I KG Gunkoted the bolt and action to give it a the custom look.

I am confused. What does the gold looking action/barrel have to do with the ugly mis-matching black on stainless?

It looks to me like the white balance on the camera was not set for indoor lighting, but rather sunshine. That's where the yellow tinge is coming from in the earlier pictures.

It's a CM action with a SS barrel.

The camera must have been on the wrong setting and the light is reflecting on the barrel giving it that look. The pictures outside are how the rifle actually looks.

Very nice work Mark!

Did you add the cheek piece to the H-S stock as well?

White balance differs greatly from indoors to outdoors, plus the shop lights don't help.

The customer supplied and installed the cheek piece. Its a pretty basic unit that seemed to actually work well. I just dont like cutting holes in HS Precision stocks....

I didnt like drilling holes in the stock either,but for my height I needed something to raise my eye up level and give me a good cheek plant. Strange as it may be to some I like the black and stainless together kinda an opposites thing. And yes this is my gun and soon I will post a comeplete analasis of accuracy, but lets just say It will shoot under a half inch out to 300 meters.(1/2 inch not moa)As soon as i get some better brass and more bullets and a non windy day at the range I will let yall know.I did get to shoot one group at 500 meter and 3 shots was 2 inches with 2 fliers (me the loads or the brass who knows)which opened it up to 3 inches.So call it ugly if you want but an ass whipping with an ugly gun is worse than one with a pretty gun.And thanks again Mark for the great gun, and any one who can should let him build them one.

I have been jealous of everyone elses for years but now i can say right now im sitting here looking at it,and the freak rain outside so i cant shoot it.No pics of groups or anything yet but i cant stress enough that it is a solid 1/2" gun.

The rifle is sharp no doubt.But I can`t help to wonder if the barreled action being cerakoted either in all black or tan would have made it that much sweeter.Congrats on the rig.I myself know first hand Mark does great work.

Ok since everyone is apperently going to give me shit over the shiny barrel, here is my honest train of thought. We mainly shoot off of a bench or on the ground right out in the sun and shoot long strings of shots. The factory varmint barrel on it was black, in a few shots it was hot setting out in the sun it absorbed heat and stayed hot. The guy i team with has this same barrel but left it polished,his barrel stays much cooler by reflecting the sun.So i figured knock off the glare and leave it somewhat shiny to keep it cooler.Once again im not too much about looks,just trying to figure a way to get an edge on the next guy.

Matt, I really like the stainless look on the rifle. I think it makes it a little different and you dont see too many out there. If you wanted a high polished finish then I would have tried to give you a little direction, but the matte stainless looks great and even better in person.

I wouldn't fuss over the matte stainless look, I think it looks fine. It's not combat rifle so who cares? If you like it and have a reason why you like it no big deal.

The discussion on coated vs. uncoated SS and various forms of finish has been dabbled with and I've done my best to answer the questions from an objective engineer's perspective. It gets clouded up in internet theories, armchair quarterback ideas of heat transfer gleaned in 8th grade science class, and flat out myths.

Bottom line, enjoy that great looking rifle you have. I'm sure it shoots very well. When you get to the point where the barrel coat and color can be reliably judged to make a difference in your shooting then pay more attention to it. Until then... shoot it!

Mark the rifle is exactly like I wanted it I have no complaints, I just wanted something a little different to shoot at our matches that would win and I believe this one will. Thanks a million and anyone who wants a great gun give Mark a call.And the bolt knob i believe was the best idea.

Most customers who were undecided about getting a bolt knob conversion loved it once they shot the rifle and used it. While its not for everybody, its hard to deny the benefits of a bolt knob conversion.

How do you find the strength of the bolt knob conversion with the 1/2" socket. Does (how?) it hold to the handle shaft knowing some may thing they're torquing up a truck tyre and not a scopemount nut.....

Ok thanks guys yall just made me feel really dumb but i learned something. I looked everywhere for a 1/2 wrench to tighten my mounts while holding my bolt.

The concept is pretty new and any bolt knob that is threaded on will want to come off when loosening up a scope ring. I used Loc-Tite 271 (RED) on the knob to try to keep it in place. While this is a neat bolt knob, I would use a 1/2" Wrench whenever I have access to it and if I had to use the bolt I would, but not just for the heck of it.

Many thanks, that was what l thought you may have intended it for. l was wondering if Devcon or similar may be of use, but in the end someone may wind the threaded spline right off the bolt, if they muscle it hard enough. So Loc-Tite may actually be the best option.

ok group update I stole 10 new Lapua 243 brass from a buddy, necked up and loaded with a GMM primer 42.5 and 42.7 gr of H4350 140 Amax with a .020 jump . Which resulted in 2 5 shot groups measuring .295 and .310. Hopefully my brass will be here before the weekend and the stuff to take care of the donuts,if so I will have a full range report this weekend.

Sorry, but IMHO its not about form, but function, and it sounds like it is doing well in that department! Congrats on a nice build, gotta love the .260!


Nothing wrong with bare stainless, but I may be a bit biased!
