Picked up this scope this morning, all I can say is wow! S&B nailed exactly what I wanted in a .308 scope. Before I get in to the scope I would like to put in a good word for Mile High Shooting Supply, those guys are GREAT...the post office lost my payment for about 7 days (took 14 days to arrive) and they were totally cool about it, and even sent the scope overnight so I could get it by saturday....good folks, and I will be doing more business with them in the near future!

I have extensive experience with top end scopes and I am totally satisfied. I have owned and shot the following extensively:

USO Canadian
S&B Dual turn 3-12 X50
S&B USMC MTC
Premier Reticle Heritage single turn MTC
S&B 4-16X42
Hensoldt 4-16 x 52 (still best glass and eye box)

1st thing I noticed is Locking mechanism is a very easy twist top, the knobs are almost the perfect size easy to grab and use, I have run the scope up and down left and right it is very easy.

This is my first scope with the P4fine, and I am ok with the reticle, it is really unusable at 4x in the bright sunlight, but I suspect it will be fine in lower light with the reticle illuminated.

I am not sure if S&B has redesigned the eye box but it is very close to the image I get with the Hensoldt Never mind, got the Henny out last night, it is still much better than the S&B (henny has no tunneling at under 5X and the glass is just better...I wish they made the Henny CCW/zerostop/ and maybe MTC)
It tracks dead nuts and is very easy to adjust on the fly, I shot from 200-300-425-500 m and back, using the P4F I shot a combo of hold over and dialed dope

all in all very happy with the first run, will run it through its paces and report further later

Re: S&B 4-16 X50 MTC Locking turret; 1st range report

The title of the thread says "MTC", but do the turrets have a milestone click every 1 mil (0, 1.0, 2.0,...)? If not, then it's not an MTC turret.

Is this a new locking turret design? I thought I saw the same turret on a rifle at the SHOT show 3 or 4 years ago on a GAP rifle.

Re: S&B 4-16 X50 MTC Locking turret; 1st range report

Yes it has the milestone clicks at every 1 mil increment. I don't know if this is the only new design, but it is not a turret I have ever seen before.

Re: S&B 4-16 X50 MTC Locking turret; 1st range report

Thanks for the review sir!

I've heard mixed reviews from people who've played around with the "new" locking turrets. I get the impression you are OK with them.

Does it appear that they'll have a tendency to inadvertently pop into the lock mode when you want them to remain unlocked? I hope that question makes sense. The rub against the new locking turrents, as I understand, it is that they're a pita to unlock and adjust on the fly (ie: during a competition) when you have to change your dope quickly.

I agree with some of the others, the turret locking mechanism on your scope appears different from pics I've seen. The ones I've seen have sort of an extended lip around the locking sleeve to help facilitate pulling them up and pushing them down. The scope you have doesn't appear to have that design.

Good luck with that P4F reticle. I had one and had to get it changed out. To me, it was too fine to see/use the demarcations below 10x but I suspect that is just me. Lots of people seem to really like the P4F.

Re: S&B 4-16 X50 MTC Locking turret; 1st range report

this is a twist, or screw type of lock it is about 1/4 turn to lock or unlock so there is no chance of "popping" in or out of lock mode. In the second pic from the top my thumb and index finger are on the locking ring. I was actually twisting it....I could post a video if you all would like.

Re: S&B 4-16 X50 MTC Locking turret; 1st range report

This is not entirely new, just new to the civilian market. The first single turn locking knobs originated about six years ago and were designed for and in use by the military only. At that time they did not have the MTC feature and the original also had a slightly lower profile.
Just a combination of an existing design with new features.

Nice scope and a very good choice!!!

Re: S&B 4-16 X50 MTC Locking turret; 1st range report

Ah, thank you for the clarification. So the very top of the turret locks/unlocks via a 1/4 twist. Interesting. I have not seen or heard of that style. These are the two I'm familiar with. The second one pictured below has the "lip" I was referring to in the earlier post to help with pushing/pulling the locking mechanism up/down (I guess.....)

I'm sort of confused about all the different type locking turrets that are or will be available on S&B scopes.

That is a very nice looking scope you have sir. Please keep us posted on how you like the turrents after you've worked with them more extensively.

The things you twist to adjust the elevation and windage. I've always called them elevation and windage turrents. I guess they're also known as "knobs"

I think he's reffering to the use of "turrents" they are turrets.

"Knobs" from now on!

Re: S&B 4-16 X50 MTC Locking turret; 1st range report

Sorry for the sidetrack. Zink, that's a beautiful scoepand thanks for the range report!

"Turrent" was I believe the result of someone making a highbrow british sounding word out of plain jane turret. I have yet to find any proper UK shooters backing up that is in fact a word.

Not to be a Scrabble nazi, its just one of my pet peeves.

Re: S&B 4-16 X50 MTC Locking turret; 1st range report

I'd like one of these on the windage knob only, I bumped mine off a full 1.5 mil at a recent comp when I grabbed the gun fast to move between stations. Cost me 3 shots before I figured it out.

I tape mine in place now.
