S&B brass - any good?

Re: S&B brass - any good?

NC,

If you've already got it and it's not crimped, worth reloading at least once, just for use in CQB matches. What purpose will you reload it for?

Hi,

give this brass to someone you don`t like. Make this with all S&B brass of each caliber you have! Primer seating can drive you crazy. Okay, sometimes you can have luck but only sometimes!!!!!!!!!

Re: S&B brass - any good?

The S&B 7.62x54R brass has too large a radius at the bottom of the primer pocket, and needs to get processed with a Lyman primer pocket uniformer tool before a primer will seat properly.
Buy Lapua instead.

The S&B 7.62x25mm brass is the same weight as Starline brass, but will take higher pressure before the primer pocket grows.
This is the good stuff. It is worth buying the loaded ammo just to get the brass.

NC,

For XTC you'll probably want to do some processing on it. Send a PM if you want details. I don't shoot XTC, but some processing would probably help scores.

I've used it in some cast bullet shooting. 762 54r, 30 40 krag, 303 brit. Upper end cast load data. Had no trouble shooting well, maybe 5 loadings on cases. No trouble.

Can't say I'd seek it over lapua for match shots that count though lol.

Some of the S&B brass that I have loaded had very tight primer pockets. Some other cases had thicker rims. Thick enough to cause problems sliding into the shell holder. S&B and a few other brands that I pick up go directly to the recycle bucket.

I have several hundred rds. of S&B 6.5 Creedmoor brass. I have 40 rds. that I have reloaded 4 times to check it out with no problems at all.
I do put a small chamfer on the primer pockets with a de-burring tool as stated above the pockets are tight.
I use an old RCBS hand priming tool.
I don't think I would use it for a Match but for plinking and fun shooting I have no problems with it. YMMV

I've got approximately 475 once fired S&B 6.5 CM cases.
These were all fired from a Ruger RPR owned by @8pointer.
They were given to me because he doesn't reload.

I've sized, trimmed, deburred and chamfered the primer pocket on them. Yes the primers are crimped and it appears it's part of the head stamping process because the crimp is in exactly the same location on each case head.

What have I noted with these?

Yes, the brass is hard compared to FC and Hornady.

They are pretty darn consistent in regards to length and external dimensions.

I've loaded one batch of 50, four times and cannot tell any difference with the once-fired cases.

As a factory round, they shoot really well out of Dan's rifle. The velocity and ES are very consistent.

Hitting golf balls at 300yds with this ammunition is very doable. So far, 5 in a row is his best.
You can't do that with shitty ammo.

I'll continue using this brass until (if) something else shows that it shoots better.

No, I'm not gonna go and spend $100 for a box of Lapua brass.
I save that stuff for 6-BR and 6-PPC.

5 in a row you own that mark alone i'm still stuck at 4. although to the consistency of the ammo we did have that 7 out of 10 rack day no way does that happen with junk ammo. S&B not holding me back one bit i have so many more issues we are fixing every time out with setup, mechanics and wind/mirage reading that are starting to consistently pay off. thanks coach. oh and PARALLAX adjustment....punch me in the throat if i screw that up again.
