Rifle Scopes S&B PMII 5-25 / AI Mount / AIAW question ???

Hello Good People,

I just mounted a new-to-me S&B 5-25 PMII that I basically stole from a really nice guy in Texas who was about to go overseas. It came with the AI mount, and seems to be a wonderful optic. I believe the gentleman said that both the optic and mount were purchased from Tac Pro, and I'm assuming that it was a package deal.

Rifle is a brand new AIAW .308, and so there shouldn't be any issues there.

I have a question though. I mounted the optic, and then did the sorta old-school boresighting trick where you look through the bore at a distant object (maybe 50 yards in this case), and then move the windage and elevation knobs to match. I noticed that I had to dial quite a bit more elevation than I expected to accomplish this.

I have the double turn elevation knob, and the scope is mil / mil. Now, I know that there are several mounts available from AI with different cants built-in. I <span style="font-style: italic">was</span> assuming that I had the 28 MOA mount, but now I'm not sure. If I did, would I have more elevation travel than I do now?

My AW has the pic rail option. Since my quasi-zeroing of the knobs with the primitive boresighting technique, I now have "only" 19 mils of elevation available. Of course, I know that with a .308 I'll probably never need more than eleven or so at the most (my last rifle was 10 mils flat at 1k yards), I'm just asking to make sure that I didn't make any noob mistakes in the mounting process.

Have I done something wrong, or am I right in the ballpark?

I mounted my 4-16 PMII x42 on my AIAW 308 with the 28 degree mount and it put it within a couple of 10ths of the bottom of the elevation travel @ 100yds (perfect).

Have you shot it yet? Go send a few downrange before you worry too much about it. It should be just right.

Thanks for the fast reply. Nope, haven't shot it yet. Work's been nuts, but I'm definitely frothing at the mouth for a chance to get some recoil therapy with it. I guess what I'm wondering is, did I get the 18 moa mount?

Even if it's exactly as it is now, 19 mils is more than enough for me. I just want to make sure I didn't make any Homer Simpson mistakes.

Great looking rig SoundFx...if it shoots as well as my AW you'll be a happy man!

You've got me seriously wondering if it is time to trade up my 3-12x50 PMII!!!

Congrats on the AIAW - that is a truly great shooting platform. Rugged, accurate, user serviceable.

Don't worry about how much you had to dial when you bore sighted. Bore sighting is a good old fashioned way to get you on paper, but you still need to zero the old fashioned way at your desired distance. You also have to remember that the scope's adjustments are calibrated at roughly twice the distance that you boresighted at, so in order to move the POI 1.0 MIL/3.6" at 50 yards you needed to dial 2 MILs' instead of 1.0 MIL.

No, a canted rail does not give you more travel - it just shifts the travel from the bottom end to the upper end by however many MOA the rail is, allowing a shooter to utilize the available travel more efficiently. As you realize, it isn't necessary for a .308, but its' still nice to have. Hence I have a 40 MOA base on my X-Ray 51 (.308).

Don't worry about only having 19 MILs' left - you haven't even sighted-in yet and as we both mentioned a .308 doesn't need that much travel. Go sight-in your rifle at 100 yards at ASR, then reset the DT Elevation turret. You will probably find that you got some MILs' back.

I've mounted my PMII 5-25X CM on two different rifles using 20 MOA and 40 MOA bases and I was able to zero at 100 yards. After resetting the DT Elevation turret I still had 26.4 MILs' of "UP" in both cases. All scopes vary, so YMMV.

PM me before you go to ASR to shoot. The best day is Monday, if you can make it up there. The range is pretty much empty, you have virgin steel to 600, and paper to 300.

Its' also really quiet - I can see and hear the 40 gr. bullets from my MOA 10/22 smack the Desert Ram in the head at 300 without others shooting (gotta wear electronic earmuffs).

Are you SURE that is 28 moa mount? It was my understanding that the 5-25 will ONLY fit in a 45 moa mount, otherwise the bottom of the turret housing hits the mount. I could be wrong but that is my recollection.

If the overall diameter of the 5-25x56 Objective is 62mm this is around 5mm wider overall than my 3-12x50....on a 28' mount I have between 3 to 4mm between the rubber sleeve on my BC flip up and a Border 26" Heavy Target barrel.

There is about 1/2cm (maybe a little less) between the bottom of the turret housing and the top of the mount.

So I'm guessing it would be possible to put the bigger scope on....but it's going to be pretty tight against the barrel.

From the pic it looks as if the rifle here has a thinner barrel profile to mine so it may be a lot more roomier?

but....+1 on the 45' mount. This is the one I've been recommended for the 5-25

No, I'm really not sure. I didn't see any place on the mount where it was marked, but it's possible that I missed it. It's definitely tight, but it doesn't touch. These pics should indicate what the situation is for someone familiar with the mounts.

As you can see, it's tight but there is still clearance. Seems pretty nice, actually. I think you guys are right, I just need to get out there and shoot it.

Aries64 - I will probably be heading to Angeles next weekend. I will PM you later on in the week if I can carve out the time to go. Weekdays are my favorite too, but I've been slammed during the week lately. Looking forward to meeting you and seeing that Tac Ops rifle someday.

It fits because somebody already machined out your mount. See the notch beneath the turret housing? I believe that is not there from the factory.

Scout is correct the 5-25 will only fit on a 45moa base unless the base is milled. This appears to be a 28moa base. Follow the link for the info on how to tell it's a 28.

Very interesting. I wonder if Tac Pro offers this as a service, because, again IIRC, the person I bought it from purchased it as a complete setup (AE Mk1, mount, scope). The machining is very clean, and it's been professionally refinished. Looks very good. Well, in any case I think I'm all set. Thanks again for those who took the time to reply!
