I have owned Sako Quad for almost a year now. Before even buying one I already looked up what kind of problems these have and the fixes for them. I wanted the easy barrel switch. It really takes around 15 sec to remove, 30 to 45 seconds to change due to packing and unpacking the barrels and POI difference is unnoticeable between changes. Of course HMR has other elevation settings, with 0.4mil windage to right.

Just last weekend, having previously re-attached barrel because of chamber cleaning (I take barrel almost always off for cleaning) I positioned at the range and shot 4 Eleys right on target 110yds away, 5th falling 0.5" below.

For background, other guns I have handled are CZ455 and Anschutz.

    My build:
    Quad Heavy Barrell
    GRS Sporter stock
    B&A Trigger
    DIP Knurled bolt handle

    Bolt:
Bolt was smooth from day one.
But closing took small force. Not much, but I wanted to make it even smoother.
I found a fix for this from web. I took some material, 0.5mm/0.0039" from the bolt to make the bolt catch trigger later. This is called timing?
I believe that also the trigger surface can be shortened, sometimes even adjusted.
Now I can close the bolt with my pinky and it is by far the easiest and fastest bolt I have tried. It just flies.

    20191022_100319.jpg

I also wanted to ease working the bolt up. As you know it gets more demanding with the 60 degree throw.
I did this by rounding the edge that climbs up the bolt to cock it.
    20191022_115143.jpg20191022_115301.jpg

I also had problems extracting 22LR. But it threw the HMR cases like 1 meter away. I do not remember which ammo did it concern, but it was like 1/20. I took slightly some material from the top of extractor claw to let it rest fully on the rim.
    20191022_102115.jpg20191022_101757.jpg20191022_101919.jpg

I also had sometimes a case left on the mag, an ejection problem. Never with HMR though, only 22LR.
For this I found some instructions but I mainly just tried myself to eject slowly and watched closely where the extra kick needs to be.

I then bent it a little and it is good now. I should boost it some more so that they fly better into my casecatcher.

    Trigger:
The original trigger was great but I had already decided before ordering the gun that I will have B&A's. It is of course phenomenal.

    Barrel:
Seems very smooth and shoots pretty good. I have a Teslong borescope and the barrel does not seem to need cleaning much at all, just cleaning the chamber every now and then is enough. I have never benched it but with Eley Match (bipod, no rear support) I do 0.9moa on average at 110yds. Very often it is me that ruins any better scores.

This is 55yds with Lapua Biathlon, 25 shots. I am saving the last boxes of this lot, I've sent few groups to 109 yds of them and have had maybe 0.8moa on all of them.
    Screenshot_20191022-122114_TargetScan.jpg

I got the HMR mostly for hunting purposes but I am quite dissapointed with the cartridge quality. But it makes an average of roughly 1.2moa.
    Hornady, 109yds:
    20190223_193142.jpg

I later on bought some CCI Gamepoint that does around 1MOA and that is enough for me.

All in all, after all the tweaking it has become a very nice rifle, achieving good accuracy with ultimate ease of use in a semi light package. I am however planning a Lilja for it to further increase accuracy, and I am in the hope of getting same accuracy with cheaper ammo with it.

    Hi Guy's
Can all of you Sako owners give me more information than I would ever need for her? Like who has magazines replacements, trigger replacements, any small parts that I may break or loose. Any spare parts that are available and who are the dealers.

I am still looking for a Finnfire as well if anyone is wanting to find theirs a Great new home!

Near Miss: Do you recall what your bolt fix was??

    Thanks so much
    Shawn

    AirGunShawn,

The places that come to mind for parts are the Beretta website for mags only, Brownells carries a few parts but MGW carries the most spare parts I believe. DIP carries a lot of accessories.

If I were to have a part failure I'd go look from brownells first. Check MGW too.
I consider only the firing pin and maybe the firing pin spring to be reasonable spare parts.
Both should take from 50k to who knows how many shots before needing spare parts. But the firing pin can ruin the range day if anything.

You can take the bolt open and after removing the springs, try the two pieces together and see where it needs rounding.
Please think ahead of yourself when removing material from these things.

I recently buffed the area of bolt rise and it became stiff as hell after putting the bolt back together. After applying a needlenose of motor oil in there I can and have operated the bolt with just the index finger. It seems the silky bare metal is not good for dry friction.

Please see the pictures I posted. The first 2 reduce the force applied to trigger, thus making bolt handle lowering more eased.

Second 2 make the bolt rise / cocking (moving the bolt handle up) more average, eliminating the peaks.

I rather not touch the trigger face, it is probably the bolt rise.

    Near Miss,
Thank you for the information. If my Quad looks like your photo's, I will do some buffing too.
A little rounding, lapping and Moly lube can do wonders.

I hope the Sako Quad Range is a quality piece.

I like it very much. The more I shoot other guns the more I value mine. I wish I had more luck with finding mid grade ammo for it.

Once you have disassembled the bolt and fit the cocker against the bolt handle unit and try to twist it like it was being cocked, you will feel where it requires more force.

Nice stable to choose from. How do you like the Trijicon scope? And what version is it?

    Hi Tom,
I really like the Trijicon. It is a 5-50x56, RS50, SFP, MOA with 1/8 MOA per click. I bought it from B&H camera for 1800.00 They also have zero interest for 12 months.
They let me test drive it for thirty days which I thought was great. It ranges from 10 yards to infinity which is something I wanted. The subtension value is 1.0 MOA at 40X which makes it super easy to use the reticle for follow up shots.
It has zero stops for elevation and windage if you want them.
Everything is clear and the clicks are crisp and positive. It is so nice that I bought one for my CZ MTR.

If you get one and the reticle looks fuzzy, remember to adjust the diopter.
The tool-less turret adjustments are really nice too. The Trijicons make me dislike my Athlon Cronus and Ares. I would absolutely recommend the Trijicon.

Are you looking for any detail in particular?

I'm going to have this Sako Quad Range in a couple days. :)

New Sako Quad Range photo's from 2/19/20.
I got my new AREA 419 clamp on rail and mounted a Trijicon 5-50x56 on her. In the process, I just found out a really cool feature of my Atlas bi-pod. It has a tool less
adjustment feature. The ACE trigger shoe is a #13 and feels great. I'm also testing some vinyl letters to identify my magazines. So far they are proving to be resistant to gun solvents and cleaners. I put all of the letters on what will be the left side of the magazine when I insert it. I want it to help me orient the magazine as well as id it.

Does anybody make an extended magazine release for this model?

I'm really happy that I was able to get this gun, she is a real joy to shoot.

Atlas BT-65 bipod feature noticed while working on my Sako Range.

I needed to adjust the pic rail clamp and went to grab the proper tool for the job. I saw a slot in a OCTAGONAL nut and thought that it was a screw driver slot. It is not !! The octagonal nut sits in a
octagonal recess to prevent the nut from turning. I realized that I needed to turn the nut but the only way to do that is to get the nut out of the recess. All you need do to adjust the "QD AutoLock" feature is
to compress the pic rail clamp with your fingers so that the nut pops out. Then you rotate the nut in
45* increments to tighten or loosen the clamp. It is a really well built unit and I have never had to adjust it before even though I have transferred it to different guns.

Is this worth 300.00 ? ..... It is to me. I'm glad that I spent the extra money for the quick release clamp feature as well. It is shown on the left side of the last photo. I guess that I just like quality stuff.

I see you have 4 mags - I think the Quad mags are maybe the best mags I have come across. Super easy to load with very nice form factor and design.
I have almost like controlled feed, the mag spring pushes the cartridge between the bolt and extractor claw and from there the bolt carries it into the chamber. Usually the last round may not be caught and it takes some slight "damage" to the rifling bands. Takes a moment to spot it and I do not think it has any chance to cause problems. Mainly I just want easy feeding.

Here are few photos of my Quad - should have added them already, it has seen some nice places!

    Near miss,
Nice looking rifle.... Is that the new bbl. you mentioned? It as a really nice high gloss, deep blue finish.
My Quad bbl. has very fine grind marks on the surface so it looks just a little dull. A bit like your silencer.

Your correct, I only have four mags for now. I'm a magazine slut so I'm sure I will end up with at least 8 and maybe ten. I have 19 Vudoo mags, 17 CZ, 16 KRISS, 12 Anschutz, 9 Ruger mkIII, 14 Kimber, a pile of Magpul .223 and some Kimber 82 mags for a gun that I don't even have yet.

I also need to get some for a Walther KKJ that I just put on lay away. It just gets out of hand !!
    I cant help myself LoL

Those bags only have my active mags in them along with a little ammo for each. I'm thinking
about using Velcro to attach one of my dope card holders to the outside of the bag and coming up with a data card. That will tell me what magazines are inside and let me know what ammunition is being used for each gun.

IE: My CZ mags get used in three guns and they may not like the same ammunition. I could list the gun type and ammunition used on the data card. I want to code them in any case.
My Vudoo is easy because she is blue. Her mags are in the blue bag.

The new Kimber and Walther are shown below. The KKJ will look a lot better after she has been totally deep cleaned. She is so dirty that I can hardly let her in the house.

Very nice KKJ, love the double set trigger. I recently inherited a KKJ 22lr that my grandfather bought new in Korea in the late 50's I think. I just acquired a 1.5-6x steel tube hensoldt for it, and man it just looks right. That simple 6x wire cross hair will still yield sub moa groups at 100yds.

The barrel is still the old one.

I was about to buy Lilja but now I am quite intrigued about buying some tighter twist custom barrel, maybe from a local barrel maker.

Long range (200-400yds) accuracy interests me a lot more. But I am not sure if the local custom barrel fares against a Lilja even with a faster twist.

I am waiting for more information to pop out.

I emailed lilja today. They don't make a T1x prefit, but will make a 9 twist 3 groove rimfire bore blank. So if you've got a good smith that can fit and install, you've got a source for a known good fast twist rimfire blank.

As I live outside US the export fees make the bill quite big. $420 barrel +$350 export license +$20ish postal to make it leave the US.
Then the customs here, 4% custom rate with 24% VAT.

    It comes down to $1020.
Then theres the FA licensing fees here so it goes to $1100 for final price.

My Quad barrel is accurate to 50yds and MOA at 110. But not with many brands and lots. With occasional likings to Lapua Biathlon and Midas, it also likes to shoot 20-30 years old Lapua but it is quite scarce. I hope to see better overall and long range performance with Lilja / custom.

    The Walther looks fantastic.

The Walther just needs to be deep cleaned and waxed.

    Hi NM,
That cost is CRAZY !! It is too bad that you folks in Finnland get so screwed. It seems to me that the bbl cost is high enough. At that cost it seems like someone local could custom make one for you.

I recently got a Sako and I just adore her. In fact I just ordered two more magazines for her tonight.
I could not pass on them at $39.00 each new. Four more next month and I should be set for a while.

The Walther just needs to be deep cleaned and waxed.

The cost is quite big. Dropping 1k on a rimfire barrel that costs 400 at source.. I am not into it. One shop sells the 1:16 Lilja for 720 and I am on the edge of getting it. But getting it here + fees is still 830ish..

Good idea to buy those mags while they manufacture them, they might turn out to be a good long-term investment! I hope in the future 3D printing will solve magazine problems.

Nice build. I've owned a couple quads and currently have one with a Lilja barrel and Manners stock, US Optics 20moa rail that was drilled and tapped for better mounting that other rails that use the factory rail to attach

Well that is a great question. Barrelled action went to Lilja today for inconsistent velocities. This is very unusual for their barrels. I bought a new firing pin and firing pin spring just to get rid of ignition possibilities...issue continued. Im sure they will make it right.

What kind of velocity spread it had?

Trying to find a chassis system for the Sako Quad, anyone knows who makes a chassis for it? Many thanks.
I was seeing XLR offered those but cannot find it anymore. It looks like it was discontinued.

On a quick glance XLR, KRG or MDT might be most willing to make a chassis for the Quad.
XLR most probable, having done some already.

Today I joined the Sako Quad family with my Range. Biggest disappointment is it come with the European threads for the suppressor. Lucky for me I have so much crap laying around I had an adapter. Not sure if this was a standard feature but a steel ring set come with min. It has the set trigger which breaks at 10 oz. and has a threaded barrel. I read on the Sako website the Set Trigger and Threaded Barrel are options and not standard items.

AirgunShawn said his come with a picatinny rail that mounts in the rail on the side or bottom of the forearm. Did anyone else get that? I did not get one.

As mine started out with a plastic stock I do not know. I have thought about installing UIT rail to my GRS but it would require reshaping the stock so probably not happening.

UIT to picatinny adapters cost pretty much compared to dovetail adapters. No china production there, maybe because mostly competition shooters use UIT for easier adjusting of sling attachment point.

Thank you for your advice. Just checked with XLR today and they told me that it has been discontinued and won't be offered again. Decided to get a Manners instead.

I played with my Quad Range trigger today. It is really similar to the T1x but with more adjustments. I only adjusted the screw that is in the same place as the T1x. Turning it out until it hits the mounting bolt reduced my pull from 1 lb 11 oz to 13 oz. This had no effect on the set trigger option, which remains at 10 oz. I tried to make it drop the sear but couldn't which is a good thing. Can't wait to get it on the bench and also install the 17 HM2 barrel. Rain rain.

You did not even change the spring? I did not have pull meter when I tested mine so I do not know how much it was.

The screw that opens against the bolt that attaches the trigger unit compresses the spring.

Out of curiosity, how many rounds did it take to break it?
    11ty billion?

I honestly have no idea. I have a lilja 17 hmr barrel on it in a Manners stock and use it to shoot sage rats (Belding's Ground Squirrels) in alfalfa pivots. It was not unusual to shoot 700ish rounds a day with my fingers reduced to bloody stumps from loading mags. The rifle is an absolute laser beam.

Hi everyone I recently picked up a heavy 22lr barrel for my quad shoots grea but bolt closes pretty hard iv tried all the tricks closing with round chambered even tried to pull the barrel forward while tightening the set screw helps a little but bolt still closes hard. I have two other barrels and they work great bolt closes like butter. Any tips would be greatly appreciated

Sounds like a warranty issue - if no practical trick works, it means some material needs to be shed off and that means it is better to let the manufacturer take care of it. Try the place you bought it from first, if they are willing to help you out.

Someone here could maybe advise to just sand the barrel face until it fits nice, I have not ever done such but it seems to me quite simple process, as long as the surface is kept even.
