Gunsmithing Sako TRG 42 & 22 bolt handle attachment method

Does anyone know what thread size Sako uses on their TRG 42 handles? For their knobs.
Cant find it anywhere and cant get ahold of anyone who can tell me.

Keith, I have played around with these and I'm not sure they are threaded on.

If my memory serves me correctly the knob is held on there by a machine screw or a set screw. I think the only way to do a conversion on them is to drill and insert a stud, then build off of there.

I dont know if this is a road I would go down! Good luck!

The reason I ask is Im making one for a customer. He told me the handle has threads. I figured a google search would turn up an answer but I couldnt find one. Cant seem to be able to contact a Sako dealer that knows either.

Not planning on offering them. I just want to get a knob made for him. Maybe his was threaded by someone. Ive never had a TRG to look at in person.

I dont doubt at all what you say is true... can any one confirm this?

If thats true I'll either have him send me the bolt and I can measure the threads or maybe he can take it to ACE hardware and figure it out(they have a thread plate for matching threads)

They have a long set screw that goes down in the plastic knob and the steel handle. I'm not sure if the plastic knob is threaded or not. I couldn't get mine off w/o fear of breakage.

Odd design, it would be very easy to just turn a one piece knob AND handle, the handle just threads into the bolt. The handle is also totally straight w/ no bend.

A friend and I would be interested in a couple if you want to make some.

The handle is threaded into the bolt body, unfortunately I'm not for sure on dimensions.

It seems the knob is threaded into the handle and a set screw interfaces between the 2 parts.

Here is my field repair of my TRG22 that broke. I replaced the set screw with a cap head bolt countersunk a bit.

IMO it would be better to make a part that is one piece, handle + bolt knob. It confuses me on how this would be a good design. Only option I can think of is if there was a factory knob choice.

I think I'll turn a new handle, and make a better knob attachment point than what Sako did(in my opinion). Then I'll attach my knob to that.
If the customer wants that done.

Please also note that the the pics are a TRG-22 handle, not a 42.

Maybe someone with a 42 can chime in if they are the same??

If the customer has me do it I'll post pics. Still need to inform him of the situation. We figured I could just make a knob and send it out but I need the bolt in hand to do it.

Actually after thinking about it, it would probably be best to design a knob that would replace the factory knob without altering the bolt, you could cnc them and sell them as an upgrade, I would imagine they would sell better that way rather than modifying the bolt as these are guns that are worth quite a bit of money and making permanent changes usually detracts from the value.

Im not really looking to sell these. Just helping someone out.
I'll do what he wishes. I dont have CNC or the means to turn out knobs like this to sell. I just make my own knobs for installs.

Itd be a great idea for someone with CNC though.

Threads will be something metric like everything else on the Sako. Regular owners manual does not tell you what threads any of them are.

Have your customer go to a decent hardware store with the bolt and try threading on a few metric nuts to it is probably the easiest way to tell. When one that fits is found, try a few more of that same size to make sure nobody put the wrong size nut back into that bin (just because I am paranoid).

Just keep in mind the polymer (plastic) knob LOOKS LIKE it had threads on it. Those threads screw into the handle. Then the set screw is though the center of the plastic into the handle.

Mine broke off where those threads would screw into the handle.

If you were to make a knob that was the same, the knob itself would have threads on it (male), then the hole through it would be threaded also (female), for the set screw.

I would not attempt to make one unless I had a unbroken dis-assembly in hand.

I'm sure anyone that has worked on a TRG knows how much thread locker is applied. It might be a pain for most to spin the handle off the bolt.

If I had the handle I would take some more pics, sent for repair though.

2 year old 22, knob does not screw into handle it's hollow. The knob uses a cheezy spreader type attachement. Screw the allen head screw in and it spreads two tit's, friction fit for lack of better term. I have a 42 will check and if different will post it.

When I took out my setscrew, it looked like the threads had hit metal, but I couldn't see for sure.

22 and 42 is same part # in owner's manual

Keith, Jim here. The thread and pitch on my trg 42 is 8 mm @ 1.25 mm thread pitch. I'm sure if you do not see this I will be speaking with you this afternoon. I will relay more detail to you this afternoon.
By the way Sako must have made some revision in design, my knob to bolt handle attachment is not like those pictured above. I will email pics to you if need be.

HB, no the handle at the knob end is not threaded for a set screw or threaded for anything, it's hollow. There is no metal on mine the screw can hit. The two plastic tit's spread and grab metal in hollow bolt handle when cap screw is tightened. Kinda like cheap plastic expanders you buy at the hardware store to install in drywall for hanging pictures. I will go out and pull the knob on my 42 and see if same as 22 and get pics. The handle itself looks like it's attached to bolt body with treaded/intregal stud. So in lieu of replacing just knob if someone make's it would make sense to machine a one piece handle/knob combo. Looks like no big deal to make one if desired, thinking pretty easy on a CNC machine.

That's what I was thinking, it would be easier to make a 1 piece knob/handle.

Unless somewhere they make a different knob that attaches.

Your very welcome HB. Your thinking right since the handle is straight what it would take is chucking up a piece of straight round stock, cut until happy and thread.

Mine had a small chip that was annoying. That is why I asked Keith if he could make me a new one in his phoenix model for replacement. Just had to get the dimensions correct for the replacement. I'll post pics when it arrives for those that are interested. From what I've seen he is producing a nice knob.

My 42 is blue, 22 parked, both have parked bolts so can rule that out so beat's me HB. Have had no problem with either and 22 had a hard life. Next time I speak with Alex or Jason @ EO I will ask or maybe they will see and comment. They might not have the answer but sure could ask Sako. I have a 260 coming and WHEN it gets here will check it.

My trg is an earlier model. Called Beretta and did a serial # search and year of manufacture on mine is 2006.

I have an older TRG-22 that has the blued bolt and it has the same threading as Ghostcoyotes. The knob is a very hard plastic in the earlier guns, almost like phenolic resin. I liked it enough I made a knob/bolt handle almost identical to it for my Tikka.

Here are some pics of the bolt knob installs I had done by: Keith @ AZ Precision. 1st is the remington 700 lv sf, also had the j-lock eliminated with the firing pin upgrade. The next pictures are of the phoenix knob on the trg 42. So if you have the older or same model you should be able to upgrade the knob.

I must have missed something reading this thread. Has a new bolt knob been designed, or a new bolt handle and knob been designed for the TRG22. I ask, because I will be picking up my TRG next week (damn shipping delays) and an very interested in an alternative to the factory bolt knob design..

Hello guys,
I have a trg22 ,and I don't like the original bolt, so with the help of a couple of friends I have built a new one for my TRG. the bolt design is from the original badger bolt knob , but for my needs I made it in one-piece with the handle.
It is all in stainless steel and it weights much more than the original sako bolt/handle, but I prefer to have it like that , because the alluminium ( or even the avional ) it is too soft for my needs , and the 2 prototype in avional have a lot of scratches for the heavy usage.
I have enlarged even the handle dimension to make the part more "proportionate"
If you want I can post some photo of my project with all the funny test made before landing to a fully functional item.
I have tried also an angled handle , but with no luck... it swivels away after a couple of shots.

as promised there are a photo from some of my tests.
Excuse me for the poor resolution of the photo, it was taken with my mobile phone, so I cannot make better than this.
Anyway, I will pos a couple of photos with my sako and the bolt/handle fitted in.

from left to right:
-the original part
-first definitive prototype without paint
-original Badger bolt knob
-prototype of the bolt knob and the handle in 2 parts and in Avional ( aeronauthic alluminium )
-prototype of the bolt and the handle in one piece made in avional...but too long, and with the bolt too little ( it was a pain in the neck to use it)
-first prototype made by one of my friend under my specifics... I asked for an angled handle, but obiouvsly he understand something very different...
if you have some suggestions it will be very appreciated.

I have already tried a bolt hadle with radius bend , but as I told you it doesn't work very well (at least for me ) . The main problem is that swivel away after some heavy field usage, even with some loctite in the threads. I suppose that this behaviour is because the new bolt/handle weights a lot more than the original part, and the threads are clockwise. So , when you hit the bolt to eject the spent case you are hitting the bolt to unscrew it. In the long run this will lead to an unscrewed bolt. The solution could be to solder the 2 parts, but I don't want to do that.
Please take note that it is not that easy to thread the radiused handle , and you could have a wrong inclination when the handle is fully screwed in
For the hole in the bolt I will try and let you know, but I don't think that weight changes so much, and maybe if weight it is your main concern I suggest you to make it in some other metal such like Titanal ( ...don't laugh, it really exist, it is titanium mixed with alluminium ) or in Titanium, but it think that it will cost an huge amount of money.
This evening I will post a photo of my TRG with the new bolt/handle so you can take a look

I don't think any softer metal than hardened steel or SS would hold up at the threaded joint for the long haul.

I would even take an aluminum knob (I'll Cerakote it black) to replace the factory plastic ball with the factory attachment method (with some epoxy added).

First post here, reviving an old thread. Jumped right into the deep end of the precision rifle game with my first bolt rifle, a Sako TRG 22 in 6.5 CM. Out of the box the bolt handle is loose (at point marked with arrow in photo) and for the life of me I can’t figure out how to tighten it or remove it from the bolt. No assembly diagrams that I’ve found. There is a small retaining screw on the end of the knob but I believe that is just to hold the knob in place. I cranked on the base of the handle pretty good with a wrench but nothing budged.

Called Beretta, they said please mail us the entire firearm. Seriously? Hoping to hear that there is a quick fix for this.

The bolt handle is loose, but you cannot tighten it or remove it? So is it really loose and moving, or is there just a gap than is unsightly to you?

It should be threaded on, with some loctite on the threads. If it is stuck in the current position, I would wrap the rest of the bolt handle with a wet cloth towl, and the bolt also. Then gently take a torch to heat up the handle close to where it threads into the bolt body.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah it’s loose. Wobbles maybe 5-10 degrees in each direction.

I tried unscrewing the bolt handle with heat and it didn’t go so well. The base of the handle cracked and I managed to mar some of the bluing in the process. Guess it’s going back to Beretta after all.
