This is my first time ever posting on a forum, anywhere, I just became a member of SH today. I am very new to long range shooting, although I have been shooting since I was 7.

I want to build my Sako m995/trg-s in .30-378 into a true long range rifle. I have been shooting my Savage 10 .308 Mcmillan stock, badger ord 20 moa base and rings, with a Leupold vx-3 4.5x14x40 (duplex, target turrets). Would like to start build on Sako as 1st custom gun. Have a Near 20Moa base coming, Leupold Mark 4 6.5x20 illum. ret. and that is it so far.

I want to start w/restocking and have been checking into Mcmillan A5, and sent email to KRG about their whisky (haven't heard back yet). I really want to set up rifle w/ DBM but have been wondering if it is possible w/the .30-378 OAL. Could the badger ord. DBM set-up for the .338 work in the A5 stock? Or do you guys have any better ideas? I prefer to stay away from the Sako mags and Trg stocks due to cost. Thanks in advance and know you guys will be a huge help.

Re: Sako Trg-s build questions

Besides our Whiskey-3, McMillan used to offer and maybe still does offer a stock for the 995 but you need a special bottom metal for it. They made it and also a company out of Canada was doing it. If I remember, both of those used the factory mags.

You can't use the Badger DBM as it is made for a Remington 700 long action although you can use the AICS 338 CIP length mags. Our chassis will take those mags as it comes (no separate bottom metal needed). Also you can use the TRG trigger if you want.

You can pick up a take-off TRG-42 barrel in 338 or 300win and put it on your 995 although you may have to adjust headspace.

If you have any specific questions feel free to pm me or post them here. Thanks,
Justin

P.S. W3C availability is a couple months out. The M2008 is coming first.

Re: Sako Trg-s build questions

I have the exact gun you are wanting to build except I didnt really need the DBM setup, It is the standard 995 mag. I use a mcmillan A5, a Rodale base, nightforce scope and a 32" pacnor 30-378 barrel. It is a pretty exciting gun to shoot. Good luck on your build

TRG-S McMillan A5 in 338 Lapua. With the A5 you do have to use their BM and factory mag. The Whiskey-3 is a great stock and feels good when its available for it. Or one other pricey option is to buy a TRG-42 stock, trigger and mag. And it will all bolt right on.

Re: Sako Trg-s build questions

I also have a Sako M995 30-378 wby

OK.... one very interesting hindrance with the TGR-S.

I had one in the past. I mounted a 4.5x14x40mm LR 30mm with M1 dials.

After taking it to the range and firing it I discovered the following.

The angle path that the gun ejects the brass, coincides with the windage turret which results with the brass getting kicked right back in the gun perfectly!

Now that sucked!
So I have to be careful with the size of turrets

BTW I just tried a 4.5x14x40mm with the CDS turrets. Same deal. Pending on the position of scope it will or will not eject. Cases (fired) fall back in. If scope is placed very forward then it will.....but rear ring hits rear ocular!

Anyone run into this one before?

Re: Sako Trg-s build questions

Thanks guys, keep the ideas coming. I pulled the trigger on the Whiskey-3 folding stock chassis as this solves alot of my concerns. The factory TRG stock w/necessary parts is a bit pricey. Does anyone know if the TRG scope bases will work on the TRG-S?

Also, some barrel questions:

I would like some recommendations for this caliber for bullet weights (read high BC) and twist rate of barrel.

Barrel length, I have heard 30" to get max. velocity.

Recommended contours, I'd prefer to stay away from a extremely heavy rifle as I would love to take some whitetails and hopefully travel out west for an elk hunt.

And finally, a recommendation for a good brake as it has a very stout kick w/the factory set up (stock has cracked)

Re: Sako Trg-s build questions

USO used to make a rail, but I think near manufacturing is your only bet now. I'd run a 10 twist with a 225 hornady or a 230 Berger. A fat bastard from APA will tame it, but damn sure won't make you any friends at the range.

USO still makes the rail for the TRG-S. I have one on the way currently from them.

Re: Sako Trg-s build questions

Fat Bastard-now that is an awsome name. I have to get one just so I can say it outloud.

So, what about barrel length?

Anyone have a good tactical/precision Sako gunsmith they use?

Re: Sako Trg-s build questions

My 2 long range rifles. First my Sako M995 in 30-378 is the one in the back. Barrel is a 32" Pacnor barrel and all the chamber work was done by Pac-Nor. Has a Roedale base and nightforce 12-42x56 scope in a Mcmillan A-5. The camo'd one is a 338 edge precision work done by Chad at Long Rifles Inc. Waiting till my ar10 build is done so I can order an atlas for this one as well as a different trigger.

You don't need an atlas, the holiday tin is working fine. Love the polka camo!

Re: Sako Trg-s build questions

Nuclabuyer, looks great. How does the Sako shoot? What loads does it like? Would you change anything about the build? Thanks in advance.

Re: Sako Trg-s build questions

I have a couple loads, it likes berger vld 185's with a healthy dose of 50bmg powder and it likes the 208 amax with 99gr (I think) of h1000. I am going to lower my scope a little with medium rings but other then that I am happy with the gun the way it is. I cant think of anything I would change on the rifle it self. I might add a Jard trigger, but the trigger on this rifle is really good for a stock trigger.
I am trying to decide on a different scope right now. I am torn between a Vortex HD, a S&B and a new nightforce. Obviously the S&B is more money then the other 2 and it is not a true apples to apples comparison. But I am trying to decide what I want on this rifle.

Re: Sako Trg-s build questions

I am also using the stock trigger. Very crisp and light. Bolt is the smoothest that I've felt. Almost slick.

Any idea on total weight of the Sako w/the 32" tube? What contour is the barrel?

Re: Sako Trg-s build questions

My barrel is med palma and with the scope, bipod etc, it is 17.5 lbs. This is certainly not a carry rifle. But I can carry it to the top of the hill, if I do my part, that is all the further it needs to go.

Very well said....
