Hey all I have a new TRG42 in .338LM. I have noticed that with a full mag the first round is very difficult to chamber. Like .50 tough. The next round is at least 50% easier, and from then on its as smooth as silk to chamber. Anybody else have this experience with their sticks???

My trg-22 is hard to chamber the first few rounds. I thought I loaded the mag wrong or something. Then I thought to myself maybe I am being to soft, this is a military rifle so now I just put a lot more strength and have no issues. All I know is that you are not going to break it if you do have to manhandle it. I think this is just an issue with having a new one. everything just needs to be worked in a little. I am glad that someone else is having the same problem so perhaps this is just a new rifle that needs to be broken in thing.

I put a little lubriplate on the bolt and action, wiped it clean, then another thin film and left it. Definitely helped smooth up the bolt, but still hard to chamber that first round. I agree franky, it is a military rifle, with a mil-spec magnum cartridge. I wonder if the mag could use a little lube, maybe the spring is hanging up with a full mag???

I doubt the spring may be hanging up. Maybe take it apart and wipe it down just to be sure if it will smooth it up. The more you work it and it begins to smooth out.
I have a TRG 42 in .338 and it cycles real smooth. I think that it is better than my 22, but not by much.

My TRG 22 is a bit harder on the first round out of a full mag. You also need to open the bolt to insert a fully loaded mag for it to seat properly. I just run 9 rounds and prob solved.

Update to this problem. Ok so last night I decide I'm gonna check this out again. I pay very close attention to how the rounds are stacking in the mag. Lo and behold they are "pigeon-toed"!!! The tips of the projectiles are "splayed" outwards towards the sides of the mag, rather than sitting straight in it. Ah ha!! I say, what is going on here?? disassemble mag and find mag spring "guide" at bottom of mag is installed backwards!!!! Flip guide around 180 degrees, load mag, rounds sit perfectly, gun chambers "fairly" easily with full mag on first round, every round after that like butter!!! So, either someone at Sako had a bad day, or some kid at the gun shop got his hands on my unit before I bought it. At least its figured out before I went shooting!!

No the round chambers just fine. You are right when you say this is not a chambering issue, but an issue with the bolt stripping the first round out of the mag. i tell you though, its so much easier with the spring guide in place properly. After the first round the bolt strips each round out of the mag super easy.

No the round chambers just fine. You are right when you say this is not a chambering issue, but an issue with the bolt stripping the first round out of the mag. i tell you though, its so much easier with the spring guide in place properly. If the spring isn't in my TRG mag properly, it simply won't take the full 10 rounds. Mags with all 10 rounds in them are almost impossible to seat in the action unless the bolt is open. Even then, the top round of any of my fully loaded TRG mags almost requires that I pound the bolt forward with a palm heel strike for the first half inch or so. After that, all the rest of the rounds feed so smoothly it is sometimes hard to tell if the bolt actually picked up a round from the magazine.

The mags for the TRG are exact size - exact size for new rounds only. You will find that with neck-sized reloads, you will not be able to fit the last round into the magazine.

All my rounds are full length re-sized, and run through a Wilson case gauge. That tenth round is still a bitch to get stripped off the top of the magazine. It is the same with new factory ammo, so (with my rifle at least) that the difficulty getting the 10th round off the top of the magazine is ammo related. I believe it is magazine related. All three of my Sako TRG22 mags behave exactly the same way.

Interesting, I have the same issue with my TRG-42 in .338 lapua. Glad I found this before tracking down Sako service.

I treat my mags as 9 round mags. The first round is always harder to strip off. The big clue is that it can be really hard to jam that last (first out) round into the mag.
Run 9 rounds and all will be good.
Note that if you are like me and subscribe to the clean every few hundred rounds theory... any crud on the bolt face and you WILL get hard chambering because the bolt face is very tightly toleranced. Just a Sako tip.

Has any of you guys contacted SAKO/Berreta for this? I should try to call them - mine was bought used so I am not sure whether I have the "right" - when I do I will post
