    I say "Bad Ass" only because it's a 1940's vintage Winchester Control Round Feed action with the 2 position butterfly safety (Least I think that's what its called).

    Don't see many of these and since the Winchesters make my heart flutter a bit it's pretty cool to be entrusted with a job like this.

    It's a full effort build so were starting with tuning up the receiver. It's a 30-06 right now but were punching her out for a 7mm Rem Mag (blasphemy?-naaaah) so the bolt face will be getting some chewin on as well.

    ID bored out to accept completely new threads. We punch these out to 1.0625-16. Just like a M700.

    It makes the bedding chore a bit easier. We'll put a draft angle on the front face as well. Winchesters have a great deal of stuff going on under the showline. There's lots of features. This makes peeling a gun apart (once bedded) very susceptible to chipping/flaking. Anything I can do to help avoid this just goes towards making the stuff stay nice that much longer.

    Plus I think it just looks cool.

    The "real" work will start once I get the big stuff out of the way. The older Winchesters have a pretty good surface finish along the bottoms, but its still a bit rough. I'll be surface grinding all the flat edges and filing/sanding the radius portions to clean everything up prior to bedding. The casting (meaning bedding since that's all your really doing) is only as good as the mold so it pays to spend a little time dressing it up.

    Final Assembly:

    9lbs on the dot with optics.
    We'll see how she shoots come tomorrow (if the weather behaves, been stupid cold here last few days)

    I love these guns!

    Didn't get to take as many photos as I normally like to. What you all missed was the extensive rework on the receiver. The entire bottom side was cleaned, ground, trued (pick one) so that the bedding would look nice. In addition it required some work on the base holes as they were all goofy. They've been opened to 8-40 and I made the rear base from scratch so that it would run "straight up" with the front one.

    Trigger job done to the factory trigger, she breaks at a crisp 2.5lbs now. I have a ton of overtravel in it as I like that, will adjust once were done testing.

    Barrel threads are now 1-1/16-16 like a Remmy. Bolt face has been opened up to a magnum (was an 06 gun prior)

    Guard screws timed to look right (Sunny Hill integrated box hinged floor plate)

    Manners stock, Talley rings, etc.

    A nice gun for huntin and killin.

    Thanks again Ken for letting us put this together. She's a beast!

    Front one had to be buzzed about .015" from underneath. Rear needed about .03".

    Andy (owner of Sunny Hill) does something pretty cool with these. Instead of using the conventional 82* countersink he's using a 30*.

    This way you can time the guard screw using the side of a threading tool insert. Sure makes life easier because you don't need a special tool or program to do it.

    Thanks for sharing again Chad. Love these old Winchester builds. Need to get my hands on one of those actions to see why so many people love them! Must be something special......

    Chad that is a very clean looking rifle! I think it may be my favorite one you have posted, well second to that F-ing beautiful Barnard you built a few years back.

    I thought I would follow up a bit on this build. My original plan was to rebuild my old War Horse 41' Winny on the "cheap" if there is any such thing. I thought I might have it re-barreled and put it in a B&C because they were the only ones with an inlet for it. Well. . . . I started thinking, "it would be nice to have a custom deal, like a full custom, for once in my life". I had had several rifles re-barreled, bedded etc, but never done a "full house" deal. I started looking around the internet at Gunsmiths, their work, and their builds. I actually stumbled upon a picture of the bedding in a rifle Chad Dixon had done. I was still not sold ( or financially fit enough) to embark on the "full tilt" deal, but, I contacted Chad about bedding my rifle in a B&C. I liked him right away when he said, via e-mail, " uhhhh, I do things differently that some guys, I would be happy to bed your rifle, but call me to discuss"

    So, I called, and we got into a discussion about old Winchesters, intended use etc. I had envisioned a classic Western hunting rifle, portable, but accurate etc. Anyway, I thought, “what the hell, let’s do this”
    This is where I get to my actual point. It is rare anymore that I meet professionals that say what they will do, and then do it. Chad delivered. He coordinated me with Tom Manners for the Carbon stock, Sunny Hill for the Bottom Metal, Brux for a barrel etc. The rifle is EXACTLY what I had in mine. Light, but not to light, longish barrel, but not too long, no “tacticool” wing dings, no brakes. It is just a Classic Rifle. Is it a bit more than I actually need? Yes. Is it more money that I intended, or should spend? Does any of that matter? Not in the scheme of things. I just got rid of a bunch of shooting iron I wasn’t utilizing to help “get there”. I am very happy, Chad is great to work with, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic in his trade. I was going to post some pics, but, you get the idea from above. So, I will post just one. These are the FIRST shots out of the rifle.100 meters.

    This is a beautiful rifle and a great build thread, thanks for documenting them like this Chad.

    The owner, Ken... I'll admit, I'm a little jealous, that's a beautiful rifle.

    A small part of me still wants to kick you for not making it a 30-06 though.

    My first LR rifle is built in a 30-06 on a Mauser 98 action. Others have come and gone but I still have this rifle and I'm itching to build another 30-06. It does so many things well, I really enjoy shooting that caliber.

    Anyway, walks down Sentimental Ave. aside, this is a great rifle and I'm still a little jealous (caliber selection sucks) **cough cough** who said that?

    Chad and I both knew the "sacrilege" we were committing. I chose that caliber because. . . . . . I have everything to go with it already. I have a couple of 06's that I love. Plus, it says "Magnum" on it, so, I get all the accolades at the range. . . . .it could have been worse, it was almost a 280 Remington.:)

    Hi Chad, very impressive work as always
    Other than a slight increase in wall thickness through the chamber area (safety margin), does opening up the receiver ring to R700 thread sepc's, offer other advantages?

    Not really. Makes it easy to thread gauge it because standardized tooling exists for that.

    Saves me $500+ bucks on Ring/plug gauges.

    On a stretch I guess one could say that a larger OD tennon does have a touch more surface area, in spirit offering more tennon support than the conventional size.

    Do I really believe it or use it as a theme? No.


    On another note, the owner had a great hunt and I'm quietly trying to sort out how to extort some elk meat from him.
