Savage 10 vs. 10/110

I saw some new Savage models: 10 FCP-SR and 10/110 FCP HS Precision. What's the difference between the "10" & "10/110"? Can I change both actions to accept any of the .308 family cartridges like the .260 or .243? Or will the 10/110 allow me to move up to the 300WM or .338 as well.

And, while I am here... Which stock will provide the best ergo's & accuracy? HS or Accustock?

The "10" represents short action such as .308 and the "110" is long action such as 30.06 or .338. So "10/110" is inclusive of both short action and long action guns. But when you buy the rifle you buy "either/or," not both in the same gun. It is just Savage's way of classification.

Oh, by the way, I have the 10 FCP HS. It is a step up from the accustock. Awesome piece, a true tack driver. I may never buy another gun I like it so much.

Someone will be along shortly to correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to remember hearing about .308 and/or other SA rounds using the LA. I am not sure if this was a savage offering or just someone rechambering from LA to SA. I would imagine it is the later of the two.

Otherwise...yes..10 = SA and 110 = LA.

No, Savage uses the 10 action for all the short action cartridges, 308, .260 rem, 6.5 cm, .243, .223, etc.

You can shoot the short action class of catridges from the long actions. CDI even makes a DBM setup that let's you use the short mags on the long action.

Advantages of using the long action for .308 class cartridges, you can load your bullets, really, really long and still be able to feed from the factory blind mag.

If you're looking to upgrade the stock, the way to go is a Manners Stock. Not sure what you're flavor would be, but check 'em out.

Back before Savage introduced the short action Model 10 in 1998, Savage did offer factory rifles with "short-action" chamberings on 110 long actions.

There's a catch though - these "110 short action" rifles had a 308-sized mag box, not a 30-06 sized mag box. You cannot run a true long action chambering with these actions as a repeater unless you mill out the bottom of the receiver.

All "two digit" Savages (10, 11, 12, 14, 16) have been made post-1998 and are true short actions.

If you have a 'standard' long action 110 (270, 30-06, 7mmRM, etc) then you can build whatever you want off it. For a while I had a 260 Remington on an older 110 flat back staggerfeed action, and rounds fed & functioned very well.

I've currently got a build underway on another 110 long action...it likely will end up being a .223 Remington repeater with factory .378 LA bolt head using CDI long action/308 mag DBM.

btw Yoshi, you mentioned the Savage 10/110 HS Precision.

That is actually 2 different models that Savage listed on one page.

For the .308 cartridge, you'd get the Savage 10 HS Precision. For long action cartridges, 300 win or 338 Lapua, the model is 110 HS Precision.

Both the 10 FCP-SR & HS Precision a great buys. But I'd go w/ the HS Precision for the better stock.

I have a Savage model 110 .338 Fed rifle. Most say the Savage model 110 is a long action.
However the .338 Fed is short action.
