I picked up a Savage 110 in 270 just for the action. Would this action hold up under the pressure of the 338 Norma Magnum? Thanks. MM

sorry for the caps lock, if it is a small shank you might be able to get away with it might not. not all the 110 actions are large shank.

It would be pushing it past it's design.
However it would make a very good platform for a 338Edge. Which will outperform the Norma.
Cheaper dies and brass too.

Good point about the shank. I didn't think of that. I was just thinking swapping the head from .473" face to .532 or whatever the Norma Mag is.
I was told, but haven't been through it, that the only large shank actions are the WSMs?

Good point about the shank. I didn't think of that. I was just thinking swapping the head from .473" face to .532 or whatever the Norma Mag is.

338 Norma has a .590 case head, like the Lapua and the big Weatherby's.
If I were to build a large magnum, I'd want the most meat around the chamber. The only real way to do that with a Savage action is to loose the nut and have a shouldered barrel.
But, like I said before, it just way easier to stick with a regular magnum. Especially if you'll get more performance without excess cost or effort.
Savage has made large shank actions on the RUM's, WSM's, Precision Target Actions, and the 338 Lapuas.
338 Norma has a .590 case head, like the Lapua and the big Weatherby's.
If I were to build a large magnum, I'd want the most meat around the chamber. The only real way to do that with a Savage action is to loose the nut and have a shouldered barrel.
But, like I said before, it just way easier to stick with a regular magnum. Especially if you'll get more performance without excess cost or effort.

Are you guys running 338 edges on a small shank? If so where did you get your barrel and is it safe.

Thanks for clarifying that. As mentioned, I've only rebuilt smaller cartridges in the Savage actions.
I've always wondered how well a Win .338 that was optimized for speed and range would do against the .338 Edge and Lapua.

I believe it is safe. Many have successfully done it, myself included.
