Savage 110BA trigger question

Recently while at the range I had the opportunity to shoot a Savage 110BA that belonged to another member. He warned me the trigger was only about 2 1/2 lbs. and it usually went off before most people were "ready." As I slowly squeezed the trigger I felt, and heard a loud clunk and the rifle would not fire. This happened several times and he had his son raise the bolt handle and pull the bolt back about an inch and then returned it to battery. This occurred several times. His son shot the rifle and I noticed he squeezed the trigger in a fairly rapid motion to get it to fire. When I squeezed fairly quick the rifle would function properly but a gradual squeeze would always have the same "clunk/no fire" result. Is this typical of this trigger or not? He said it was something they were trying to remedy.
The reason he wanted me to shoot the rifle was to feel how well the muzzle break reduced recoil and that it did! It was amazing how little recoil was felt. The rifle displayed very good (to me) accuracy as well.
So, is this a common problem with the 110BA or just an isolated incident?
Anybody else have any experience with this rifle? Anybody else have any input as to why the rifle exhibited this condition?

Re: SavagSavage 110BA trigger question

you are hitting the trigger its self before the accutrigger blade is fully depressed. thats it. square your finger on the accutrigger blade and pull straight back untill you feel the trigger itself and pull straight back. sseen this problem with people and savage rifles alot

Re: SavagSavage 110BA trigger question

I have a mod 10 with the old style trigger that would do the same thing. Had to add just a tiny bit of sear engagement to cure the problem. This Savage was the first that I ever encontered with this problem.

Re: SavagSavage 110BA trigger question

that is a good thought about sear engagement. the accu trigger can be set to low so when the blade is pulled the sear will drop. he may need to increase the spring pressure using the accu trigger adjustments

Re: SavagSavage 110BA trigger question

I've got a 110BA and have not had the issue noted above... I have a couple Savages, all with no issues... When I fisrt got my 110BA I checked the trigger weight and it came to me set at 2 1/2 lbs. Weird...

Buddy was probably messin' around with it and didn't get the action back in the stock properly? Could that be a possibility?

matthias, I will be sure to pay extra attention to that next time. Odd thing is the accutrigger blade had a small buldge on it, somewhat in the center, and as soon as the back edge of that buldge lined up with the trigger face I would hear the "clunk" and feel the action "do that something" before my (I thought) my finger could even have gotten close to the trigger. There was quite a bit of the "blade" sticking out in front of the actual trigger face. Yet, I admit, I could have done just what you said. Thanks for the tip I will try it to see if thats what I did.

ETA: I responded before reading all the replies...my fault. I will try to make sure of my finger placement and then suggest the spring tension if need be. Thanks Mike and matthias.

Re: SavagSavage 110BA trigger question

I think the very slow pulling of the trigger combined with the light spring pressure keeps the sear from properly releasing. Before I readajusted mine I replicated it with the action out of the stock and you could see that the sear was not fully releasing. The partial release was causing the thunking sound.

I don't know why just adjusting the sear cured the problem. I would have thought it would have needed more tension to help with the release.

I am going to modify this trigger like I did on my 7-08. The pins that hold the trigger to the housing are a sloppy fit. I added shim stock between the housing and the trigger and got rid of the side-to-side wobble. It made the trigger much crisper and more uniform.
