I am thinking seriously of buying the Savage 12 FT/R .223 with a 1:7 twist.

Does anyone know how this gun shoots straight out of the box?

Is there another manufacturer of .223 that shoots more accurately than the Savage which you can recommend?

I plan on learning longer range shooting with this .223 before I go to a custom 7 mm.

Thanks

You will need to shoot 80grain;s to do anything at 1000. your savage will be fine; 77 grain to 600 will work. My savage shoots well to 1000 with 80G@2920. It has a shilen barrel with a wylde chamber[80 grain rounds are long: 2,50.

I am happy with my factory 223 F/TR. The stock could have a vertical grip.

There aren't many fast twist factory 223 rifles.

That same gun with a bolt head and barrel could also become your 7mm later. Not an ideal stock if you transition to F Open but there are other threads for that discussion.
