Hi I am new to the forum and to bigger caliber rifles (as of nownow i have a S&W M&P 15x with a aimpoint comp3) and I am looking to buy a 500+ range rifle.Im on a limited budget and have decided to buy a Savage 308 in the Choate stock ( http://www.cabelas.com/savage-arms-tactical-rifle-150-choate-8482-stock-1.shtml )

My budget is right around 1200

I was looking at:
750 rifle
200 base and mounts
300 glass (swfa ss 10x42)

My questions is what base and mounts should I get? At what Height? And can someone tell me if this is the model 10 action?

Thanks all replies are appreciated

Re: Savage .308 Build

As far as bases and rings I run a weaver 20 MOA 1 piece rail and TPS low rings. I have a 44mm objective scope and this set up allows PLENTY of clearance. EGW also makes a good base for just a little more. But since you are looking to spend around $200 in rings and bases there are more options out there.

And yes that should be the Model 10 action. I have that stock on my Savage and I really like it. Keep us updated, looks like it's going to be a nice setup!

Re: Savage .308 Build

I didn't even know Savage sold a factory rifle with the Choate stock. That seems like a really great deal!

The Weaver Tactical scope base is excellent, as is the EGW. As for lower cost rings, TPS and Seekins both make great rings. Seekins are a bit more expensive, but with the bases mentioned above, you'll still be well under $200.

Re: Savage .308 Build

But the cheapest Savage short action that you can find and build it exactly how you want it, the beauty of the Savages besides the floating bolt head is the barrel nut system so you can install your own barrels with a wrench and headspace gauge.

Re: Savage .308 Build

+1 to the Weaver Extended Multi-Slot 20MOA base for Savage short action round rear...Amazon.com tends to have the lowest prices on this.

That mount + Burris XTR low rings = GTG
