Just looking for opinions in the savage a17. Don't know of anyone personally that owns one. I am still seeing ammo on the shelves and thought it would be cool to possibly get one for my daughter to shoot.

I have the savage bolt action . 17 hummer i love it, pretty useless past 250 yrds unless it dead calm no wind , other than that its a good trainer, and loud as hell, you will need ear pro

Good to know. It would definitely just be a rifle to take out and have some fun with and teach little ones how to shoot since I can still find ammo for it.

Anyone with experience with the semi auto savage?

I have a a lot of experience and have probably 5k rounds on mine. It's a blast and runs like a champ. I will say you have to run them wet so liberal oil works better than thin grease.

Good to hear! Seen a few videos on youtube, but you never know with them! Wanted to hear some actual experience with them! Thx! And also for the liberal application of oil!

I had one. I did a ton of research before I bought it. When it was first introduced (2015-ish) there were lots of problems with A17s cycling. I bought one around 2017, when all of the problems were supposedly ironed out. My first mail-order gun.

I had nothing but problems. I couldn’t shoot more than 2-4 shots before it jammed. Sent it in to Savage for $50 shipping and when it came back, it cycled 3-5 shots before jamming! I followed Savage’s video on how to lube it. Didn’t help. Dumped to rifle.

I say if you buy one, make sure you get your hands on it before purchase and move the bolt a bunch to see how much resistance there is. My sample was stiff and had some small “catches” as the bolt slid. Other samples I handled, long after I dumped mine, had a lot smoother bolt cycling (by hand).

What it having feeding issues? Like the bolt hitting the round halfway up the body? The early ones did that and savage fixed the design

I can’t quite remember how it jammed. Probably the way you describe. I think mine was an old one that Bud’s kept in the back for the unluckily soul that didn’t pay for their extended warranty.

I do remember that Savage replaced the trigger as well. I used the recommended A17 ammo too.

I strongly suggest buying one, if you must, at a place that will send it back to Savage on their dime if there are problems.

In the first design the mag well had too much length from the front to back of the rifle. This would cause the mag to lean backwards and the bolt would miss the back of the round, catch the round right in the middle, and jam up. They fix the inlet to make sure it fed okay. The early triggers they changed but it was due to manufacturing process, not because they kept failing
