So this may have been answered before but i looked for awhile and cant find exactly what i want to know. I am looking into building a new rifle since the girlfriend claimed my FN A3G (dug for reason and found one) and i am curious about the savage as a platform. I was wondering what action to build off of? It will be a 260 Remington. Should i get a savage 10 or are the new axis models the same action and barrel nut. What should i look for? Thanks for any help.

Re: Savage actions?

You want a Model 10/11/12 or Stevens 200 action...not much difference between the four choices to be honest (although some Model 12 actions are large shank target actions, vs. the standard small shank action). Avoid the Edge/Axis for builds as there is very little aftermarket support for them.

I've got a centerfeed (4.4") 10FP action in a Manners T2 stock with Criterion prefit 260 Rem barrel, and its an excellent setup.

I also have a staggerfeed (4.27") 12FV factory barreled action in a Bell & Carlson A2 Medalist stock...also a good option.

Re: Savage actions?

Well some guy at work has a 11 hog hunter series (20 in barrel/iron sights/threaded barrel) that he is trying to sell. I would like to pick it up and build off it but i want to put it into a McMillan stock but after looking at them i see there are some different savage feed systems> staggered feed/center feed/blind magazine and only certain ones fit into certain stocks. Is there anyway to know what is what without looking at the gun?

Re: Savage actions?

You can also get the LRP action for $460. Repeater target action w/target accutrigger, not bad...

But it depends upon what you will do, if you don't like the accutrigger, then the lrp action having the target accutrigger won't matter.

Model 10 actions are about $350, Stevens actions $230.

You could do worse than to use a savage action, I own a model 10, but if I did it all over, building off the LRP action would be my ideal.

Re: Savage actions?

According to Savage's site, the 11 Hog Hunter has the accu-trigger; bolt release on the side of the action; and internal, center-feed magazine.

FWIW, I am not a fan of the centerfeed with blind magazine, as I have a 1-piece scope mount on a model 11 which leaves very little room to load rounds into the magazine and for the life of me it gives me fits charging the rifle. If I were to do it over, I'd seek out the older stagger-feed action, or plan on having an AICS or other compatible type of DBM installed (which i am still debating on what brand to go with)

Re: Savage actions?

Yea, no goes on the Savage Axis. I just built a 260 Rem for a buddy off of a model 11 action. Used a criterion pre-fit, xlr repeater stock, SSS comp trigger and recoil lug, vortex pst optic and badger rings. The rifle is a definite shooter and looks really good. Just some food for thought.

Re: Savage actions?

If you do decide on the savage I suggest calling Jim over at Northland Shooters Supply. He normally has a good inventory of savage actions, stocks and barrels.

I believe he stocks mcgowens, shilens, criterions and factory savage barrels.

I spoke with him today actually and he informed me he just got a batch of the older mcmillian A5 stocked 10fp's he said they were parting them out so he has some great prices on MCM A5's for the savage SA.(and no lead time)

Here's his contact, Great guy to talk to and very helpful.

Re: Savage actions?

I was looking all over for that info and couldnt find it on their website. Where did you look to find it was a centerfeed???? Maybe i just overlooked it or is it something you know from experience.

Re: Savage actions?

doesn't specify on the site as to center or staggerd. I do believe that all current production savage actions are centerfeed(4.40 spacing) and I think its been that way since 2008ish.

If the barrel is factory threaded I would assume its current produciton. Your best bet is to either get the rifle in your hands and measure the action screw spacing, or get your co worker to do it for you. Staggered feed will be 4.27 spacing and centerfeed is the 4.40.
