I am still in the R&D process with these. Brass cases seem to work the best in these. The polymer coated cases (Wolf, Brown Bear, Tulammo) don't seem to want to function as smooth.

If I end up making these for people, I want them to function perfectly, regardless of what rounds they put through them. I want everyone to be happy, without the slightly possibility of hickups.

I only shoot brass. Sending PM.

Re: Savage Axis/Edge 10 Round High Capacity Magazine..

PM sent, just stumbled across this forum and post, and I am thrilled. I would love to find out more about all these mods you are creating and would appreciate any information on all of your "products". Thanks in advance.

Re: Savage Axis/Edge 10 Round High Capacity Magazine..

Hey. I just wanted to drop my post in here. I have a Savage Axis .223 and I'm very interested in the mag you're developing. The 4 round is decent, but I'd feel better varmint hunting with a bit more... well, capacity. So, keep up the good work, I'll be checking in regularly to see when you have it fully working.

Re: Savage Axis/Edge 10 Round High Capacity Magazine..

This is still in the works... However, I have been side tracked just a bit. I am currently caught up with everything else I was working on, so I will be back full bore into this project.

It has been quite an eye opener about how many people are shooting the 204/223's. I am doing my best to make something happen for ya!!

With the current prototype that I built, there was 2.375" of COAL available. So for it to function 100%, I would say the maximum should be around 2.370 - 2.372". I have the Black Hills Match 52gr loaded into it right now, and there seems to be plenty room.

Once I get it totally working, I will get the COAL and post that information for you.

Re: Savage Axis/Edge 10 Round High Capacity Magazine..

I am also interested in the high capacity 223 magazine. Are you planning on selling a 10 or 15 rounder? I know the topic says 10 rounds but I do believe the 223 prototype shown in a previous posting was a 15 rounder.

Thanks for working on this. It is really appreciated.

Re: Savage Axis/Edge 10 Round High Capacity Magazine..

My prototype was a 15 rounder. I will also be working on the 10 rounder as well. I am trying guys, I really am!! I will get it to you as soon as possible!!

Re: Savage Axis/Edge 10 Round High Capacity Magazine..

I am definitely trying for sure. I especially now am working on the 204/223 magazine simply because of the numberous requests to do so. I have also been asked numberous times about the long actions as well. I don't know about that one yet though.

I will be doing my best for you guys, and hopefully the work will pay off and get the word out to everyone. Thanks!!

I too bought 3 of the 308 Ratmags from z71rat, and they function flawlessly! He's definitely good to go, IMO! GREAT product.

Re: Savage Axis/Edge 10 Round High Capacity Magazine..

Just as a side note... A buddy of mine and I are looking at doing some really cool things with the Savage Axis/Edge rifles. There will be a combination of a high capacity magazine, barrel enhancements, addition of a muzzle brake, stock modifications, trigger enhancements, and camo paint jobs, all in one rather inexpensive package.

From some of the preliminary testing, these rifles are showing some really impressive possibilities. There was even a .33" 3-shot group with some cheapo .308 factory ammunition during testing.

He is also putting together a website that will outline all the various offerings. I think you guys are gonna be impressed with the outcome of this venture. Taking a $250 rifle, making some modifications to it, and shooting some very impressive strings of groups, right along with some of the "big dogs"!!

STAY TUNED... MORE TO FOLLOW!! Yes, a tease, I know...

Re: Savage Axis/Edge 10 Round High Capacity Magazine..

We are actually looking at changing the grip area, increasing the size to help prevent the breaking of the stock in that area. Also, it will make it more of a vertical hand position. We will be adding a rigid shell to the stock to give it alot more strength. It will also be more tapered to match a Manners MCS-T style stock. It will be a resin/fiberglass based addition.

Re: Savage Axis/Edge 10 Round High Capacity Magazine..

Put a 223 Axis in layaway today.

This is gonna be my first rifle other than my ol' less-than-faithful Marlin 795 22LR.

Put me on a list, I want (at least) one of these 10 rounders when they're perfected!

Re: Savage Axis/Edge 10 Round High Capacity Magazine..

I am new to this forum, but saw a posting for 10 rd extended mag for savage axis. I just bought mine ( savage axis .308 ) it is an awesome rifle Im just bummed that you only get 4 shots. I am very interested in your extended mags and would like to know how i get one.

Re: Savage Axis/Edge 10 Round High Capacity Magazine..

Hello, thank-you for filling a need for Savage Axis extended mags! I'm interested in 10-round mags for .223 and .30-06. PM forthcoming. Cheers!

Re: Savage Axis/Edge 10 Round High Capacity Magazine..

I am new to the site. And learning how to navigate about it. Am looking for a .308 cal magazine for my savage axis. Hate the stock one. Not sturdy. If ratmag reads this, I would appreciate any contact in regards to what he is doing with the ten round mag. Thanks!

Re: Savage Axis/Edge 10 Round High Capacity Magazine..

z71rat,

I don't know if this will help, but the original "4" round magazine for the Axis 223 would only work reliably with polymer coated cases only when you use 4 rounds. If you put in 5 rounds (as many of us do since they fit in perfectly) and you use polymer coated ammo it will malfunction most of the time but if you use brass it won't. At least that is my experience.

My point is that even the factory magazine malfunctions when using polymer rounds (and sticking five rounds in the mag, of course) but it works fine with brass even when topping off the mag with 5 rounds. Maybe it has to do with the magazine spring tension or something like that.

Re: Savage Axis/Edge 10 Round High Capacity Magazine..

I have been playing with spring tension, spring rates, different springs, and nothing has really made a huge difference. In studying the rounds, I have found that it is more of the angle of transition that is causing the feeding problems.

I can get almost all of the 15 rounds (from the prototype) to feed with the brass cased rounds. The polymer coated rounds definitely have a tougher time making it past the the step in the factory magazine body. I am currently working on an internal sleeve to make the transition smoother. So far, it has helped, but I am still not satisfied with the performance enough to put it out there for people to be bothered by it. I want my stuff to work... period, regardless of what rounds people choose to use.

I am currently working on all my outstanding orders, but I will be working on them again shortly...

Re: Savage Axis/Edge 10 Round High Capacity Magazine..

Happened upon this while trying to track down some higher capacity magazines for my Savage Axis in 7mm-08. From what I have read these function really well and I would be interested in picking up two or three. If you get a chance Rat, I'd appreciate some prices on these magazines.
