i can get a brand new savage edge/axis at our local walmart for around $260 i think, cant remember the price exactly. i need a rifle for around the field behind our house. me and my dad have already checked in every direction in the field and its 200 yards, then another 600 yards of woods and i was wondering if a savage edge in .223 would be a good choice for coyote within 150 yards, we've already seen coyotes within 50 yards of us. i dont plan on upgrading it at all besides maybe a rifle basix trigger from the money we get for taking care of the coyotes. would this be a good choice? i am by no means looking for a bench shooter to shoot at competitions, the most itll be on a bench is probably a break in/sight in and checking the zero on the scope every few months, other than that itll be a hunter rifle.

Should work well for the bullets you'd be using, like Vmax/etc.
Has a 1:9 twist so you can use heavier bullets as well (up to 75 gr).
I'd go with the 60-68 gr for great precision in that small distance. If the farthest you'd be shooting is 200 yards, you can just aim and shoot with a 100 or 200 zero.
For the money it would be worth it for the extra shots compared to a single-shot H&R or other brand in .223.

thanks, ill probably get it either tomorrow or monday, and getting paid $50 per coyote will be more than enough to pay for ammo and a few extra magazines.

If you can find a stevens 200 they are the same price and will accept all standard savage parts. The Edge is a good rifle for a loaner but there is no aftermarket for it if you ever want to upgrade later. Just find a stevens at the same price and you're set.

i decided to bite the bullet and get the savage edge tonight while they still had it. it cost $267 without taxes and without any ammo, i didnt get to shoot it because it was dark but the trigger is a hell of alot lighter than what i thought and its a lot lighter than the trigger on my pre accutrigger .17 hmr. in all i think i got a good deal on it, and it was the last one they had and wouldnt get another shipment for another 4-8 weeks.

shot the gun with some cheap tulammo because they were sold out of hornady vmax so i jsut ordered some off of midway usa, at 50 yards i was gettin 1/2" so it isnt that bad. went coyote hunting with my dad and we were about to shoot a coyote until our dog showed up and it turned out the dog followed us all the way down and scared off the coyotes....

Get a Stevens 200, it has a recoil lug unlike the Edge. $0.02 NM, just reread and saw you bought the Edge.

It sounds to me like you want a no frills hunting rifle that will deliver acceptable performance.

Overall i like it a lot and so does my dad. He was wanting a .22wmr marlin but the savage hardly costs anymore than the .22 and if they dont have it the next time we go he will get a .223. I think ill eventually get another in probably .270, .308, or .243
