Went to the range on Sunday, first time in a long in awhile. Savage FCP 10 5r on forth round shell casing would not flip out of bolt. Had to pull out with finger. Every thing looked ok figured it was too many loads on FGMM brass, next shot bolt did not extract casing and got stuck half way out. Bolt movement very stiff, found the extractor had moved out side of bolt. When I got the bolt out of the gun found that the detent ball was missing. I have ordered neww parts but was wondering if anyone else had this happen?

Yeah....it happens sometimes. The stock sized detent ball is 1/8" and seems to be a bit too small letting the extractor move around too much without tention on it, usually resulting in a case not being extracted. I have lost an extractor just as you mentioned as well. It had about 1000 rounds on it and I figured it was just was tired and the spring worn out. I read on one of the gun blogs to replace it with a little bigger detent ball (.140=9/64) and it would create a stronger extractor. I've replaced the spring and larger detent ball and never had an issue since. Hope that helps.

I did that once, but then again, it was from a cartridge that I had mislabeled and was 2grains over Max load and blew out the extractor assembly and ejector assembly. Thankfully, the boltface and chamber were ok.
