Hey everyone. Savage came out with the new LRP rifle. It is offered in 6.5 Creedmoor, 243 Win, and 260 Rem. I am looking at this rifle for a dedicated long range setup. Which caliber would you go with and why? FYI, I already have a 243 Win rifle that I use for hunting.

Re: Savage Long Range Precision Caliber selection help

I am just getting started in Long Range Shooting and I purchased the Savage 12 LRP 260. I really like the accurracy of this rifle and Savage really put a lot of thought into these new rifles. My main concern when purchasing this was being able to get the C.O.A.L. that is needed to load the Bergers and there is no problem getting them to the lands in this rifle and still being able to utilize the magazine. If you reload then I think that you would do better with the 243 or the 260, it seemed liked it was harder to find components for the Creedmoore but if not then Hornady has that Superformance ammo for the Creedmoore. Your balistics for the 260 and the Creedmoore are very close but what I have read so far is that the 260 has the edge and that is why I went that route. You will be very happy with this rifle and the way that it is put together, it is one solid rifle. Good luck and I will watch for your post to see which direction you decide to go.

Re: Savage Long Range Precision Caliber selection help

260, only because I have all the components and dies. If you already have a 243 and you reload, it would make sense to stay with that caliber. Rodeo Trash makes some great points too ^^^.

Re: Savage Long Range Precision Caliber selection help

6.5 Creedmoor because of loaded factory match grade ammo, which you can reload later after firing. Also you can get a little more velocity with a shorter barrel than a 260rem. Better barrel life and more energy then a 243win. If you decide to add a semi-auto precision rifle, 6.5 Creedmoor is preferred to load high BC longer bullets which fit in the magazines and load reliably.

Argument in favor for 260rem is better brass than 6.5 Creedmoor, but hornandy brass is good.

Re: Savage Long Range Precision Caliber selection help

My opinion is the .243, my friend, and here's why. I don't know how many years you've spent shooting your 243 deer rifle. But if you've used it for quite some time and have mentally adapted to its long range characteristics, recoil, performance, etc, I say stick with that caliber. Chances are you are already set up to reload a 243, correct?

The 243 has all the abilities of the 6.5 and 260 if in the right hands. If you've developed an acclimation with the 243, I say YOU'RE the right hands, so stick with it. But if you'd like to spend the extra time and money to build a brand new setup for another caliber, have at it! Most importantly, though, have fun!!!

Re: Savage Long Range Precision Caliber selection help

I could be wrong but last time I looked at the twist on that rifle in 243 it was 9 1/4. Sucks cause if it was 1-8 it could be shooting the 260 beatin' 115 dtac! I'd go 260 if the 243 isn't in 1-8.

Re: Savage Long Range Precision Caliber selection help

Yea, the twist will not support the 115 dtacs, however, the 105 amax shoots awesome and the 243 can drive it real fast. But what am I saying, I have a 260AI. Just get the 260 so you can shoot the heavies and have better BB life than a 243.

Re: Savage Long Range Precision Caliber selection help

i would opt for one of the 6.5's the twist on the 243 is a big bummer. you can't go wrong with either caliber. if you don't reload it is a no brainer get the creedmoor.

Re: Savage Long Range Precision Caliber selection help

Rifle Shooter has an article this month on this rifle in 6.5CM. His shot <1/2MOA at 100 yards with factory Amax ammo. Hard to argue against that.

As far as brass issues go, if you want Lapua brass for the 6.5CM, fireform Lapua .22-250 brass with pistol powder and COW.

Re: Savage Long Range Precision Caliber selection help

I think I am going to go with the 260. The 6.5 creedmoor brass are VERY overpriced and you bring up a point about the 243 that I didn't know of. I am a hand loader, wouldn't be any other way. Rodeo Trash, does your setup have a matte finish barrel and receiver or is it a gloss blue? From the pictures it looks matte, but I thought it was gloss blue. What kinda accuracy are you getting from your setup? what is the scope? Sorry it is a lot of questions, but you have a sweet looking setup there.

Re: Savage Long Range Precision Caliber selection help

It is matt black and that is the Vortex PST 6x24-50 mil/mil ffp. I am still working on my loads but I did get a 5 shot group at .356 but the load is to hot so I am backing off and doing more case prep and then I will be back at it.

Re: Savage Long Range Precision Caliber selection help

The cheek pad is something you added, correct? Also, what type of base/rings did you use and what height rings, how much of a gap is there between the barrel and the objective of the scope? Could we get a few more pics?

Re: Savage Long Range Precision Caliber selection help

Yes the cheek rest is something that I added, it is a Karsten. The base is a Nightforce steel 20 MOA base and the rings are Nightforce steel medium height rings and there is about a 1/4" gap between the scope and the barrel.
