The rifle has no issues with high velocity copper plated bullets.
But it will not extract any match type ammo like Eley or RWS that have lead bullets with lube.

I’m the original owner of this rifle purchased in 2010.
It was then send to Savagegunsmithing and Scott Null performed an accurizing package on the rifle.
For the first couple of years, the rifle was able to extract all brands of ammo.
After that, I started getting constant failure to extract. Cleaning the rifle (and disassembling the bolt, taking out the extractor and cleaning everything) didn’t solve the issue.

At this point, I only have 2 explanations for this problem:

1. Extractor has “eaten into the metal where it locks (refer to pics)
I’m surprised because I though the metal of the extractor would be softer.
I’m attaching a couple of picks that shows what seems to be the issue.

2. Chamber too tight:
Yesterday I gave the chamber a good rub with a coiled stainless steel brush and tested the rifle again with CCI 40 grain standard velocity.
With the first 50 rounds there was no issue. But after I started getting FTE.
I also noticed that some of the rounds are pretty difficult to chamber. Could the chamber be too tight?

I already submitted a request to Savage. They are telling me to send them the rifle. If you guys don’t have any ideas of what’s going on, I might as well send back the rifle for service.

possibly the extractor "hook" is worn enough that it isn't gripping the ring enough with the match velocity ammo. the HV will squish and seat bit more into the hooks giving the a worn out one more rim to grip, whereas the lighter loads don't do that as much.

another thing is the band that keeps the extractor in the groove may be relaxed enough where it's not putting enough pinch on the rim, especially with the lighter loads not squishing. coupled with some carbon buildup and extractor wear, it doesn't take much to keep the case in the chamber. a little pressing together of the band should get it to grip better.

if savage already went over it, they should have picked up on that, but you never know. if your not paying to send it back and forth, and can do without the rifle, maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to send it back if they are going to cover it.

a carbon ring could be a culprit too, maybe using something a bit more oomph than hoppes if you have it.

maybe try a different lot of ammo, it may be a bad run. trying to catch up to meet demand may have produced a slip in their QC.

Im looking at the pics and I see what looks like a buildup of gook in the extractor groove cut into your barrel. You sure thats some sort of wear caused by the extractor?
Looks like impacted grit to me.Try digging at it with a pick of some sort to see if some of it comes off?

Where the extractor locks in is pretty clean. The shiny part is the metal worn out probably by the extractor.
At this point my best guess is that the lead build up in the chamber is the major cause. Last year I would shoot 2000 rounds without cleaning (and without any issues). Even when cleaning, it was usually with only patches and Hope 9.

I just bought some Shooter's Choice lead remover to give the gun, and especially the chamber a good cleaning.

Savage hasn't examined this rifle. It was thorough email, and the lady just wrote back saying she doesn't know and that she will provide me a label to for shipping the rifle.

I'll try to get this resolved by myself. If I can't, then I'll send it to Savage.

The ejection issue seems to be resolved.

I cleaned the chamber/barrel with a stainless brush and shooters choice lead remover.
Then I gave the chamber/barrel a good rub with JB bore bright/hope 9/ Ballistol. I did this 3 times.
I manually chambered a round and made sure there was no resistance.

After that I went to the range:
1 box of CCI SV. After the first 20 rounds, I started again getting FTE. Again, some rounds were difficult to chamber.
After that, everything went well. I fired 2 other boxes of the same ammo with not one single FTE.

Now I’m not sure if it’s the CLP I applied inside the chamber with a Q-tip after the first box, or something else.
I’ll need to do some more testing to confirm the issue is resolved. What is certain though, is that it’s much better than before.

Most of the rim-fire "failure to eject" problems I read about online are simply due to a lack of cleaning and proper maintenance. Usually the chamber, extractor recess in the bolt or action, or gunk build-up in the bolt face itself under the extractor are to blame. At some point, pull the circular spring clip off of the bolt, remove the three parts (firing pin & extractors) and clean out the grooves & parts. Put it all back together after a thorough cleaning (take a picture first so the parts go back the way they were made and assembled at the factory). The picture of the action shows a very heavy build-up of crud in the left extractor recess. Get a nylon dental pick and clean out all of these areas.

I hear people say they never clean their 22 rifles. I can't believe they have reliable weapons that way. If you shoot 22 shorts ever, it will make extraction nearly impossible due to the carbon ring which shows up in the chamber after as few as 5 shots.
