Looking at setting up a bolt action .22lr to start practicing my shooting with the purpose of eventually getting a .308 long range gun. I've bought a bunch of tactical .308's in the past and not had the time or money to be able to shoot them, so figure .22lr will make it much easier to get into the swing of things.

I have a SWR Spectre that I want to be able to mount on whatever gun I get, so i'm looking at the threaded TR/TRR or the factory threaded CZ 452 with adapter.

I've found a CZ 452 threaded version locally for $435 OTD brand new, but am having a hard time finding a Savage locally.

So what says the crew, get the CZ or find a Savage?

Also any recommendations on reasonably priced($150-300) optics for use on the .22 that will prepare me for stepping up to the .308 eventually.

Oh yeah, pics appreciated for inspiration.

My vote is for the CZ, mainly because I have one and it shoots lights out. And I am also kind of an instant gratification guy so since you can get your mitts on one today if you wanted I go that route and start shooting. I have the 21" varmit model, and I plan on getting it cut down to 16 or 17" and threaded to make the ultimate squirrel gun.

Good luck

Re: Savage MKII TR-SR vs CZ 452 - Need help deciding

i would get a 452 varmit and have it threaded. its got a heavier barrel than the already threaded american model. i have a cz 452 lux, varmit and american and the varmit is my favorite.

Re: Savage MKII TR-SR vs CZ 452 - Need help deciding

This subject has been done to death here in the rimfire section. Don't fret I am not going to slam you and tell you to use the search function.
The CZ hands down. Heck even if all you can find is the CZ Scout I would pick that one over the Savage.
I don't reccomend scopes in that price range but I did buy a Bushnell 3200 10X recently and it seems to be a relly tough little piece of glass. Clear and repeatable, available in mil/mil, I would buy another if the need arises.

I like that idea but really don't want to spend another $200 on threading.

Re: Savage MKII TR-SR vs CZ 452 - Need help deciding

Just picked up my Mark 2 TR on Friday and it shoots very good out of the box. I would expect the TRR model to do as well, you can expect a stiff bolt out of the box but some use should loosen it up, I can already tell mine is getting better just after a few shooing trips. I think either one would be a good choice.

Re: Savage MKII TR-SR vs CZ 452 - Need help deciding

Thoughts on picking a scope for a rimfire.

this helps as the same question is getting kinda old:

EASIER TO FIND STUFF - sniper's hide google search

a bunch of $300 and under scope throughout:

22 scope+ mounts+rings threads

check natchez, they usually have good sales on good scopes, optics planet, yadda yadda

if you have the money to buy the CZ, get it. it seems to be more forgiving and accurate with different ammos, even the cheap stuff, plus has more of a "large rifle" look and feel.

and yes, the heavy barreled action is worth the wieght and extra cost.

which one? </div></div>

16" threaded American for now.

Plan on picking up a Varmint in .17hmr in the next month too.

Re: Savage MKII TR-SR vs CZ 452 - Need help decidi

I think CZ is an overall better choice, my next rimfire will be one but I do love my Savage. The action is darn ugly but it works very well. It's simple and I love the trigger, even though I thought I would hate it before purchasing the rifle.

I do love the CZ 452's and 455's though.

As far as optics, look at Vortex Crossfire series. $200 gets you a mil-dot reticle, 6-24x zoom, nice glass, 50mm objective, covered turrets, AO, and a 30mm tube. Here is a link:
http://swfa.com/Vortex-6-24x50-Crossfire-30mm-Rifle-Scope-P45452.aspx

Or, you could all the same features but save 100 dollars through SWFA's special 1" tubed scope of the same make and model here:

Hope this helps,

GREAT CHOICE! I think you'll love that rifle.

As for scope recommendation....
I had a nikon buckmaster 3-9x on my CZ 452 for a while and its great for 200 bucks, but if you want something closer to that you can use in the big boy world id shop around for a nikon monarch side focus 3-12x42mm. I got mine brand new on ebay for like $340, and IMO for an optic with side focus, the price and clarity cant be beat.

I ended up installing my Nikon Buckmaster 3-9 on it last night off of my Tikka .243, looks good and plenty of power to start off with. Been planning on upgrading to a Zeiss Conquest for the Tikka anyway.

Perfect! Only other thing I'd recommend is to drop it in a Boyds tacticool stock

Probably wait to do that with a Varmint, the thin shorter barrel of the American might not look that great in the Tacticool.

The mueller apt is a fantastic scope for the money. 30 mm tube, mil dot reticle, great glass and superb resale value all add up to a great scope. You can find them for just over $160 shipped. check out the optics sale section at rimfirecentral.com if you want to confirm my story on resale......often sell for $150 slightly used.

He never said it was a TR, only that it was a Savage. It could've been a BTVLSS or another model offered in LH

you could have chosen the CZ because of quality and the fact that you could get a LEFT handed version.

Re: Savage MKII TR-SR vs CZ 452 - Need help decidi

Im a big fan of the CZs. I love my CZ 453 in 17hmr. It made my Savage look silly in everyway. Very accurate and well crafted, with a nice trigger too.

Re: Savage MKII TR-SR vs CZ 452 - Need help decidi

Go CZ. You will absolutely love it. The Savages are very nice, and accurate, shooters. I am just not a huge fan of the looks and feel of them. If you are looking for a 16" threaded, look on GunBroker. There is one on there right now for cheaper than the one locally to you. Of course shipping and FFL fees may come into play, but take a look either way.

Re: Savage MKII TR-SR vs CZ 452 - Need help decidi

the americans feel great in your hands, but the narrow front definitely makes it tougher shooting from the bench. the biggest killer to the savage for me is the tin metal feel i get when i touch and cycle the bolt.

This is most certainly the case. I had a Mach2 in a varmint model and then switched to an American in the same caliber. Shooting them from the same rest is completely different and a challenge. I just enjoy the American more for hunting.

I bought one (Varmint Mach2)...bought an American HMR...found a NIB American Mach2, so I bought it and sold the Varmint...then I got a steal on two Americans in .22LR and .22WMR...I went Czech x 4! Haha RFC members got me hooked. But now I have one in each caliber in the model I like the most, looks like I am good to go.... time to feed the centerfire addiction!
