Hey All,
My new baby just arrived. A 8.5 lb baby boy named Savage.
All kidding aside - I just got my new 10FP in .308 and have a base and rings dilema - hoping you guys can help. I'm looking for recomendations on what type of base to use (1 piece or 2) and which brand. Also if I should use a flat base or one with 10 or 20 MOA? And ofcourse, cost is unfortunately an issue. The longest I'll be able to shoot regularly is around 300 yards although I hope to find a range like Young's in Wolcottville where I can reach out to 600+. (If my scope will handle it) I currently have a Simmons Blazer 4x16x40 that will have to do until I save for another. Also what rings can you recomend? Thanks.

Re: Savage Model 10FP base/rings q's....

My savage wears a warne 20 moa base.fwiw i personally would get a 20moa base.I think the simmons would even reach out to 600 with a 20 moa.as far as rings there are many great ones out there,bo,lupy,ior,etc.etc.For now until you can save for better optics get a set of warne maxima 1"rings for the simmons they are steel and pretty good quality. When you save your optics also save for some high quality rings.......good luck.......just my.02

I had the same rifle and I went with Seekins Precision Rings and Base. You can't beat the quality, price and Customer Service, Google Seekins Precision give Glen a call and he will square you a way. Once again Customer Service is the best in the business.

+1 on the Ken Farrel 20 moa, I have Leupold QRW 30mm rings on mine, with a 6.5-20 MK4.
My 10fp with the above setup, 44.0 gr of RL-15 under a 175smk and a YHM Phantom will smash clay pigeons at 600 yds all day long, with 12.5 moa of elevation.

Re: Savage Model 10FP base/rings q's....

My 10FP wear a EGW 20MOA 1piece base with Warne rings. Neither TPS nor EGW had rings in stock, so I found the Warne's at Sportmans Warehouse and havent replaced them. The EGW base was very inexpensive and has held up well.

I'd go with the 20moa bases. Its better to have and not need that to need and not have...

Almost the exact setup as I'm running except I'm using a 15MOA Farrell base and TPS rings.

Re: Savage Model 10FP base/rings q's....

EGW 20-25moa base with some Burris XTR low rings at about $90 combined is the best value/quality combo for the budget oriented. unless you want the ability to throw your rifle from the shooting platform (not recommended with a budget scope), they are more than strong enough to take daily use. just make sure you have a fine grade flat file handy for the install. I've used the EGW alum base on a dozen or so savages I've set up for friends. On two of them I've had to mil/file off about a 0.015"x0.100" notch in the front of the base where it makes contact with the receiver because savage didn't make sure that the recoil lug was concentric with the receiver. combine that with the fact that the EGW runs a tad long (it overlaps the lug/receiver mating area by about 0.012), and you get a situation where the base hangs up on the lug instead of siting flush on the receiver. but considering the price, 3 minutes of non precision file work is no big deal. other than in that particular situation the EGW is perfect as far as i have see.

Re: Savage Model 10FP base/rings q's....

My Savage has a Badger 20 MOA base and Leupold Mark 4 rings. If your looking for something on a budget, you might want to look at the Leupold PRW rings (or QRW, whatever you prefer). I put them on a Marlin 17HMR and I really liked them. Plus they're steel. Recently bought a set to use one for a flashlight mount on my AR also. I think Midway USA has them for around $45. Just something to think about. Best of luck with your selection.
