After completing my sniper basic course for my S.O. I thought I would celebrate by painting my .308. It was hard to do, but once the paint started flying, I actually had some fun with it.

So do you guys strip the metal before applying paint? What about primer? Sorry for the dumb questions but I have never painted a gun like that before.

Re: Savage Precision .308 paint job--PICS

I recently painted mine, we used Duracoat. We scuffed the stuff with 400 grit sand paper, and after that we used some gun cleaner to clean the scuffed areas and used gloves so the hand oils didn't get onto the areas where we were painting.

I actually used an indoor outdoor rustoleum paint. It has a gritty finish to it for added grip. It is even a flatter based paint then the duracoat ultra flat. And, the colors matched with the environment we have around here.

ARP here will be the one to ask questions though.
Great job. </div></div>

So for a blued barrel, would you just scuff it up, or do you have to make sure all the bluing is removed?

Re: Savage Precision .308 paint job--PICS

hey one more question, do you guys like to clear coat over the krylon? I have heard it will make it more durable, but didn't know if this was true or not?

Re: Savage Precision .308 paint job--PICS

I hate clear coating the paint due to the shine it leaves on the camo. Don't worry about it being durable. If it gets scratched to where it bothers you, just paint it. You really can't mess it up, do don't worry so much. And remember... its just paint, have fun with it.
