Savage PreFit Barrel Cut to Shouldered Barrel?

To make a savage small shank prefit the barrel has to be turned down to a diameter that allows the nut to slid over the barrel. The nut is your shoulder. The barrel isnt thick enough anymore to have a shoulder. A shouldered barrel has to be a specific diameter.

Pretty much. In order to create a shoulder, you need the diameter of the shoulder to be greater than that of the thread. That way, the shoulder will bottom out against the face of the action/recoil lug.

Non shouldered vs shouldered:

What is the reason you need a shoulder?
The shoulder is what stops the barrel threading in. How far the barrel is threaded in determines how deep or shallow your chamber is. A properly located shoulder is vital for a properly spaced chamber. A barrel nut for savage style serves as an adjustable shoulder so that the differences in the action and bolt measurements can be overcome for actions which don’t control their dimensions close enough for a shoulder to be reliably cut on the barrel.

Thanks Spife I should have worded that better. I understand the shoulders purpose I was just wondering why he couldn’t just use a barrel nut or red loctite a barrel nut in place.

he could (use the nut, not the loctite). but i think that's what he's trying to avoid for some reason

action would be helpful
