I am starting a build and I'm set on a savage action. Making a 6.5-284 so I am using a long action standard bolt face, but I am not sure which is better for me.

Sporter or Varmint?

Using the gun for both long range target and some hunting. Is the savage sporter for the model 110 and the varmint is for the model 12. I see that the sporter has the hinge plate and varmint has a magazine on the savage website.

Do the hey different diameters where the barrel mates?

Is one more suitable for a larger cartridge?

Never had either of these action before and can't seem to find the right information on them so I need a little more advice before I can decide.

Re: Savage Sporter or Varmint Action?

They are the same action.

However, my model 12 had a thicker, more substantial recoil lug.

In either case, just buy a new recoil lug.

Just decide if you want the DBM or the hinged floorplate and use that as your determining factor.

Thanks for the reference. This is just the man I need to talk to.
