Okay, I've done my due dilligence but my search "fu" is weak. I tried the "real" search engine and got nothing so please don't flame me.

I just noticed that Savage is offering a model 10 with 5R rifling and factory threaded for a supressor. Does anyone here know anything about the savage factory 5R barrels? It seems to me that this might be the best deal going for a newbie but I hate to spend my hard earned money being the guinea pig.

Any experience or thoughts from the wisemen would be greatly appreciate.

Thanks

Re: Savage with a factory 5R barrel

I wouldn't be surprised if they are, Savage actually listens to what their customers want but I'm with 1S2K. I want to see a link because I just looked at their website and I did not find such a critter.

Re: Savage with a factory 5R barrel

i know i had seen older savages in years past with threaded muzzles but they were pre accu trigger
i would like to find more info about these

until you get some real trigger time on a gun to find out if you like it in reality
you are being a guinea pig with every new firearm purchase

Re: Savage with a factory 5R barrel

Nice, to bad they dont offer it in mcmillan like they do with the others.

I dont mind HS-precision, but the palm swell feels like im holding a damn grapefruit.

Re: Savage with a factory 5R barrel

You could order it, sell the stock and get a mcmillan for it if that is your desire.

Wouldn't lose much to sell the stock, if any providing it is brand new.

Re: Savage with a factory 5R barrel

If you want one with the Mcmillan stock just call Effy Sullivan she can have the factory make you one no problem

Re: Savage with a factory 5R barrel

When I saw this it made me wonder so we ran a bore scope down my Model 10 PC. 6 Lands and grooves so not a 5R. But what we did see was a pretty nice looking bore for a factory gun. Not sure if they are hammer forged or button rifled but from the looks I'd say button.

Re: Savage with a factory 5R barrel

The 5R with the threads is their latest offering due to Remington SPS Tacticals now having that option. The one that I know about also has a fluted barrel!! I personally think it is an AWESOME idea to go that route, especially since that is exactly the gunsmithing work that I would have been doing to it anyway. Now I can get a rifle and NOT have to send it away for any length of time waiting for the evolutions!!

Yet again, SAVAGE LISTENS!! My funds and time will remain loyal to Savage. It is without a doubt the most accurate rifles that I have ever owned or shot... BAR NONE!!

Re: Savage with a factory 5R barrel

I just ordered the PC with 5r barrel. Does anyone know if it is fluted also? I think it is however I have heard that the HS precision and the PC don't have flutes. Can someone verify?

The standard/stock HS and the CP aren't fluted, and the pics I saw of the "5R" HS and PC also weren't fluted, although the 10-FCP in 5R was. It's possible the 5R versions of those two will also be fluted and the pics I saw were just the standard models.

Seems like Savage will make you just about anything you want nowadays. Good times.

Re: Savage with a factory 5R barrel

Just found this thread and thought I'd dig it up since I just ordered one of these and don't know as much about it as I'd like and other seem to have been in a similar boat recently.

Here's the link to it at Buds:

The questions I still have are:

#1 is the barrel floated?

#2 is the action bedded?

#3 what mags does it use?

I wrote Buds with these questions and will post them once I get some answers.

Re: Savage with a factory 5R barrel

yes
no-its got an aluminum block, i skim bedded mine
factory 4 round mags or the elusive SSS 9 round. or CDI bottom metal uses 5 or 10 round AI(?) mags

I was thinking about a higher cap mag (9-10) since it comes with the lower cap mag. Which one is the best value?

Re: Savage with a factory 5R barrel

well money wise, the 9 round mags from sharp shooter supply is the ticket. but.... getting them is the issue. honestly, i would just suggest that you upgrade to the CDI bottom metal and save the head/heartaches of dealing with SSS. i have been waiting since march for a call about the 4 that i am on the list for. the only benefit to the SSS mags is that they work well and all you have to spend is the cost of the mags ($80 each) and they fit the bottom metal thats factory. the CDI costs $220ish plus $80ish per mag so there is a higher initial cost. but Jeff will take care of you at CDI. my only thing is this. with the HS and its aluminum block, i wonder if the bottom metal will drop in or does the block need to be inlet? im not positive that anyone with a HS has installed CDI. plus be aware that the bottom metal may not match your stocks bottom line and may sit recessed in the stock. search and look at pics so you dont buy it and then come here and talk smack on it like the last guy that didnt do his research. its made to work first. with all the different stocks out there, its not like jeff can make one for all of them to fit flush

Re: Savage with a factory 5R barrel

I'll look at the CDI but it sounds like the wait for the SSS might end up equalling the time required to get the CDI to fit and work right. Then there's the additional expense of the smith to do the mod. IF that ends up being the case, I would save myself $230+ in the end.

I'm thinking I'll put my order in with SSS and just use the original mag until then. I'm in no hurry to get spare mags, it's just a good idea to have them.

Re: Savage with a factory 5R barrel

no, dont get me wrong. the CDI is drop in. if inletting is needed, jeff will do it for $60, but we are already inlet. and in most cases no one has any issues. IF you get thru to SSS you will be behind people who are still waiting since march for 80 or so mags. some longer than that. one tip, get on the list. do not pay upfront. you will have them sitting on your money for ... a long time, lol.

oh and dude, you gotta stop talking like that. savage owners do not use that kind of foul language. so lay off the smith talk, lol. really, its drop in in most cases. Jeff said minor material removal on the inside of the stock.

LOL. Alright....drop-in drop-in drop-in. Got it. CDI it is then.

Re: Savage with a factory 5R barrel

but like i said, we are inlet for it. but i can not recall anyone using an HS stock (like mine and yours) with the CDI. if you buy it from brownells or midway, you can return it easily. you can call jeff and ask. use my pictures of my bedding job if there is a clear one of the bottom. worst case is he has to inlet the block or you have to remove some AL with a dremel. but its worth it

Re: Savage with a factory 5R barrel

I just picked up the Savage 10 HS 5r. It is fantastic! On looks alone, best purchase I have made. Have yet to shoot it cause the Millett rings for the LRS are WAYYY to high using a Farrell. (The base is great too) Waiting on the Valdada low V-Tacs to take up 3/4" from the Milletts. Will post full report after it goes bang.
