I have a Remington 700 30-06 with a Nikon 3 4X16X50 scope. Scope states 1/4" at 100 yards but I adjusted it 8 clicks and it went 4 inches at 100 yards. I'm assuming it's due to scope height. Could it be anything else? Is this normal? If 1/4" does 1/2" at 100, would it be safe to assume at 200 one click will do 1" 300 will do 1.5" and 400 will do 2"? Going to range day after tomorrow but was wondering. Thanks

The catch is you need to make sure you’re not chasing a bad shot, heated barrel etc.
But yes, if your gun and your skill is squared your logic is correct for the click value and no the SOB did not create that issue.
You can also put a scale or somthing you can easily see at 50 yards. If your scope is functioning as a 1/4” scope you should see the reverse. You should also be able to do this (close enough to tell if it is 1/2” or 1/4” clicks) just by creating a stable position and watching the reticle without shooting.
Edited to add: it is not normal for a scope be 2x what it is marketed as.

I can guarantee you that your assumption of the cause of this error (scope height over bore) is not correct.
There's either a problem with your shooting, with your scope, or a combination of both.
The most likely explanation is that the error is 99% poor shooting and 1% scope tracking error. I could be wrong tho.

I ran a cotton patch down barrel before I shot to make sure barrel was clean when I got to the range. The first 3 shots fit into a quarter at 100 yards right in the bullseye. I bore brushed the rifle, cleaned it with cotton patch again, and had to wait 10 min to shoot since I was at the range. This is when I made the 8 clicks up adjustment believing it would give me a 2 inch increase at 100 yards but it shot 4 inches high at 100 yards. The next 3 shots after the adjustment was made fit into a quarter directly 4 inches above the first 3 shots in the bullseye. As I mentioned, I was at the range, and I was using a concrete shooting bench and shooting rest.
I would run a tracking test, find a 1" grid target, set your objective lens to 100 yds (300ft tape measure) from the target, and see if your scope tracks like it should.
Also I would not recommend making adjustments after cleaning, run a few fouling shot through it then go back to tracking.
If I am breaking in a barrel, I typically just get it on paper, I worry about sighting it in after I have some rounds through it.
I would also recheck my torque values on my scope rings and mounts.

Barrel isn't being broken in. I've had this rifle for 10 years. I sighted it in at 200 yards and didn't change it until I went javelina hunting and wanted it set for 100 yards. That was years ago then I got into hunting with muzzle loader, and 30-06 became back up rifle. Shooting a 250 grain 50 cal bullet with a ring finger worth of gun powder poured down the barrel is a blast. The Thompson Center Bone Collector is a blast.
did you back it down 8 clicks and see if your shots returned to where they were previously? yeah it's prob the scope, esp if you're shooting quarter-sized groups at 100. when you look at the turrets on a scope like yours (not knocking it, i have a few) and then some of the tactical scopes (nightforce, vortex, etc), pretty easy to guess the less expensive hunting models might not track as well. but once there, my hunting nikons have held their zero's over the years.
If I recall correctly, it was a $500-600 scope. I go back to range tomorrow. It's held it's zero great, but I have to believe there is a logical reason why this is happening. It crossed my mind maybe I set target up at the 50 yard and I was thinking I was shooting 100 yard. I also shot my muzzleloader which is set for 100 and it shot right on target so I don't think that is it because it would have been off if I was shooing at 50. I agree with you to back it down. My plan was to shoot 3 where it's at, 4 inch high, back it down 4 clicks and see if it's 2 inch high, then drop it another 4 clicks and see if it shoots on bullseye at 100 yard. I'm sure tomorrow I'll figure it out and it will be something dumb cause I haven't shot since Feb when I went Javelina hunting.
Don't clean your barrel. You changed the bearing surface from your previous shots. When I clean my barrel, roughly 800 rounds or so, my first few shots are high till it settles back in.

I agree and that's why I think its something simple. I also bore brush 3 times and clean with a cotton patch every 3 shots. I do that because the guy that sighted it in and put 3 shots within a dime at 200 yards was ex Green Beret and he said 30 cals will drift and drop if you don't do a simple quick clean every 3 shots. If I don't, my shots drift right and drop. I'll figure this out tomorrow and regardless how retarded the reason, I'll post it. My muzzle loader gets weird if I don't clean with cotton patch every 3 shots too. Nothing major or crazy, just a simple cotton patch clean. Like I said, this is something simple. The guy next to me got an elk tag and was sighting in his new rifle doing 1 shot every 15 min cycle at the range. I started dividing my attention between my project and helping him shoot 3 and make corrections . Then he asked me how to gut an elk and I told him what I do and to watch some youtube videos. Then he asked me what kind of knife to buy to gut an elk.
The 308 is one of the most forgiving rounds ever made. 6br a bit better but your splitting hairs.

Its normal for POI to drift as you foul the barrel, it usually takes several shots for it to settle after cleaning. Your friend has taught you an unnecessarily labor intensive regimen. My .308 goes about 800rds between cleaning or patching. My 300wm goes 3-400.{old barrel} I only have about 100rds through the new barrel.
Went to the range. It shot 4" high. I dropped it down 4 clicks and it shot 2" high. I dropped it down 4 clicks again and it shot right on at 100 yards. I bought it up 4 clicks. Shot it at 200 yards. It shot right on. I talk to a friend with a scope that moves 1/2" per click at 100 yards even though it says 1/4" and he says he dropped his rifle and it's been that way since. His like mine still holds zero and moves where you want it to when you make adjustments. It's my back up rifle to the muzzleloader for this elk hunt so I'm rolling with it and I'll figure out how it shoots past 200 after the hunt.
Yep, you were correct in your original post. And the something wrong, in my opinion is not excusable. I might try reaching out to the MFG. It is something the MFG probably already knows about.
Isn't it great all the voodoo cleaning stuff isn't the issue? Makes you wonder about the people that pass along such BS with authority and maybe even other funny BS, sometimes even their credentials.
For what it is worth, Clean dry bores almost always shoot "slower" than a "fouled" bore.. Some by a lot.. Regardless, you should not see a 2moa drift @ 100 between clean and fowled with a 308
Send the scope in for service after your hunts are over.
I just had a Leupold VXII 4-12 I've owned for 15 years or so develop issues and sent it in for service using Leupold's online form. They basically rebuilt it and turned it around in 2-3 weeks at no charge. Check Nikon's website for their service protocol.
I think you send the scope back to Nikon and let them evaluate it. In almost 10 years of doing freelance work with Nikon, I have never heard of a scope suddenly becoming a 1/2 MOA per click from the stated 1/4 inch. If I can help you out drop me a note and I will be happy to do what I can. That goes for anyone else having an issue with a Nikon scope/bino.
The hunt went good and bad. I slipped on a rock covered by snow with the muzzleloader so I went to the back rifle 30-06. It worked out because I found three bull elk 250 yards across the canyon. After 3 days of 8 miles a day through 6-8 inches of snow it paid off. On the way home I hit some black ice and slid off the road but thank god trees caught me from rolling down the canyon and when I went back to get the meat, bears, loins, and coyotes took all of it. Weather was brutal. Most days nothing was melting off the trees. It was either snowing or freezing.

I dozed off. When I woke from the head bob, I was behind on the turn. Truck was in 4H. Tow truck guy said if I was in 4L, all the axles would have been locked in together. 2 tow trucks, 5 hours, and $2200 to get it out. Thank god I have insurance. I wish I would have dozed off in a spot that I would have realized how tired I was. I shot the elk at 1430, quartered it up, and got back to my truck at 1730 and wrecked at 1815. It was 15 degrees and I was so beat, I had to stop every 100 yards to catch my breath on my way back to the truck. I had to to walk 4 miles to get cell reception when I crashed. I walked to the closes camp. As I walked up (with a flashlight), they said that's a good way to get shot, From the dark I replied, sneaking up from behind you without a flashlight would be a better way to get shot. They laughed and waved me in. They offered me a beer but I was so tired and dehydrated I asked for water. He laughed and said, if you don't want a beer, I wont bother offering you whiskey. Side airbags deployed so now I am waiting to hear if it's totaled. I slid sideways at 15 mph. I don't think I hit that hard but it hit the A post and I think that is what activated the system.
Rock, Nikon will take care of making sure the scope is back to original specs, the greatness of a No-Fault Policy. I have helped guys who had scopes got through hurricanes, tornadoes and even a tree falling on their UTV. Nikon took care of them. I have already reached out and when he's ready we'll get Barry taken care of correctly.
I will no longer buy nikon. Some time back, it used to be my go to scope for a hunting gun. Then i bought one and put it on a gun and instead of 1/4 iphy per click, i was getting 3/4 inph per click. My brother bought two after that, and BOTH of them were the same way.
Now i will tell you, knowing the value of what the click actually is, the scopes hold zero and do what they are supposed to. But TO ME, if the mutherfuquer says 1/4’’@ 100, if fucking better be. Three scopes in a row? bought brand new at different places and different times? Fuck that, i am done with them. There are way too many scopes out there that adjust properly for me to waste my time with them.

And for what it’s worth, i have a leupy that when you turn it the way it is labeled to bring the bullet right, the bullet impact adjusts left. But that is one scope, not 3 in a row. And no, i aint a leupy fanboy, either. I have my share of them, but i think my weaver super slam beats the pants of the other hunting scopes i have.

No, i sure didnt. The scopes function, i suspect it is a pretty common thing with them. I think most people that shoot just are not that nitpicky. And in the grand scheme....does 1/4 matter compared to 3/4? Not really. The only thing that irritates me about it is the scopes are labeled at 1/4. I have participated in numerous Nikon related shoots and one of the first things I do is make sure all scopes are dialed in correctly. I have used 100's of scopes and I just haven't encountered the problem you had with 3 scopes. If you still have them I would return them to Nikon for repair/replacement. I don't know anyone who would be happy with a 3/4 inch click adjustment when it says it should be 1/4 inch per click. Please let me know if I can help you with the return to Nikon Customer Service. I will be happy to try and make sure you get your scopes working as they should.
