Quick question for experienced NFA / class 3 guys. one of the AR's I have is a plain jane dpms, nothing special. Im looking to do a "fun" build out of it instead of the usual hanging an extra long bull barrel off it and trying to shoot insane distances (I have a .308 for that stuff).

Id REALLY like to build it out as an SBR, with suppressor. I havent done a lot of research yet, and not sure what an integral barrel would cost, but would it be more practical to source an integrally suppressed 16 " barrel than a 8-11-ish inch barrel and add a suppressor for tax stamp form purposes? IF I got a barrel in 11 inch or so, and added a suppressor (then permanently affixing that suppressor) would equal 16 inches overall, does that just negate the SBR paperwork and leave only the tax stamp for the suppressor?

One more question: would a lower that has been registered as an sbr, be legal to swap uppers out occasionally back to a rifle length one (not permanently, just for an outing or something)? Not that anyone would want to do that if they have a legal suppressed sbr lol, but with as easy as it is to change uppers, I could see that being a valid concern/question.

Just be sure to have a copy of your form 1 or 4, whichever the sbr is on, with you whenever you plan to shoot it as an sbr.

yeah thats something to make sure of.. If the barrel and suppressor combo is 16" and permanently affixing them together will bypass the sbr paperwork, that would be even better, and just have stamp for suppressor, I just dont know how that works. Im good with 16" overall, just dont want to add another 8" to an already 16" barrel

If your state alows, I would go SBR all day and just throw the suppressor on when you want it. And be careful if you want/use it as a home defense weapon cause my 10.5 with a standard A2 birdcage puts out a 3 or 4 foot fireball that would be bad for things like curtains and carpet, haha. Be mindful that most companies will not warranty their suppressors if they are used on anything under 10.5". If you wanted to go the integrally suppressed route I would recommend the Leonidas from Libertycans.com in 300blk. I know that it takes your rifle from 556 to 300blk but it is hearing safe when the suppressed 556 isn't. For just a "fun gun" that is the route I would take. But I would never pin a suppressor on one weapon, cause if I pay around 1k for a suppressor I want to be able to use it on as many weapons as possible.

Just buy a stripped lower (to use as your serial# for your sbr) and your suppressor at the same time and just sit back and wait. You would still have your complete 556 around to shoot and enjoy while you waited for the stripped lower to get egraved and the suppressor to get ATF approval. There are so many options that are opened up for you when you get that sbr stamp for the lower. You can now run shorties in 556, 5.7, 300blk(using a 30 cal can that can be used on your longrange rig), etc...

just imagine a 7" barrel on your AR combined with the Law Tactical’s Gen 2 AR Folding Stock, which would be around 18 inches all folded up. That would be an awesome package!!
