Shot this pair this morning over a doe decoy and Foxpro Young Whitetail Distress call. In the stand and all set at 0710 hrs. Two on the ground by 0730 hrs! What as rush! My first coyotes too! Started hunting them about three weeks ago and this was setup number 22. Called one in on my very first hunt using a PowerDogg (couldn't get a shot) and have not seen another one since then (until today that is)! Decided to pony up for a FoxPro Spitfire which I received on Friday. Had to work the weekend so today was the first time out with the new call. Awesome! 55 gr Sierra Blitzkings didn't agree with them at all!

Re: South Carolina Coyote Double! My First Yotes!

Thanks Steve. I don't think the black ones are especially rare here. I saw three of them on one hunt this year during deer season. Actually the three of them were coming to this same doe decoy in the same field I shot these today. This is the first time I've used the doe decoy for predator hunting. It's one of the inflatable ones from Tinks. I let the air out of the front legs and had her almost face-planted. Like something was very wrong with her. That scene coupled with the Young Whitetail Distress call must have painted a picture of an easy, BIG meal. Sure fooled these two yotes. Gonna try 'em again tomorrow on another property.

Very cool. It is a total rush! I have the Spitfire but haven't used the deer distress call yet. The wounded adult rabbit and mojo decoy have worked very well several times, though. Good work. Can't wait to call again soon.

Year round, no limit, electronic calls are legal. If hunting at night, there are a few more rules. See links below:

In other words, kill all of them you possibly can!

Gave them both to the local taxidermist. He's gonna do a full body mount with the black one and a shoulder mount with the blonde.

Re: South Carolina Coyote Double! My First Yotes!

Thanks folks. Here's a pic of the doe as I had it set up. Face nearly in the dirt. Seemed to work really well. The black one came in to within about 15 yards of the decoy. Watching her like a hawk. He probably would have come a little closer, but I didn't give him the chance! The blonde came into the field about 50 yards from the decoy and was headed her way watching her too.

Re: South Carolina Coyote Double! My First Yotes!

great with the doe decoy! How far away were you shooting? how did you know where to set up, so the yotes could be clear of you? Where did you put the Foxpro - how close to you? lots of questions...

The black one was 150 yards straight out in front of me. The blonde was 160 yards and over to my left just a little. The range was dictated by the size of the field (a valley really). I set up on the field based on the wind. Crosswind today from the west to the east (my left to right). The black dog was probably 150 yards away from being downwind of me. The blonde one was completely side-wind to upwind of me. Behind me (except for the treeline I was set up in) and back to my right (downwind) are pretty open so I figured the yotes might not approach from that direction. The call (sitting in a small pine sapling) and decoy were set up a little over a hundred yards out to my front. Worked out pretty well.

Re: South Carolina Coyote Double! My First Yotes!

Scoop thanks, Worked out very well. for... you. Man, I am trying to get a read on this.

Yotes were not together? Black dog at your 6 & tan at your 2? wind at your back ?
Sounds like they could have your scent & kept coming? Doe must have had them fooled... dumb question--how did you know they would approach thru the valley & not from behind you? Scout earlier?
I am headed out next week & not sure where to set up. 3 large fields, flat, no terrain corridors, no high ground. have seen yotes, just not clear where to set up. Bring .45 1911 ,223 & 12 ga?

They came in about 5 minutes apart. Black dog at my 12 o'clock and blondie at my 10. Both were in no danger of winding me. Wind was from my 9 o'clock to my roughly 3 o'clock. The place where I hunt is also a rifle range and shotgun sporting clays club. The ranges and skeet fields are behind me and back to my right. That's why I figured they wouldn't be coming from that direction. Basically knowing the lay of the land.

Scout a little and find the best places to set up with the wind in your face or at a minimum crosswind to you. Check wind direction for the day of your hunt online from your favorite weather provider then expect the unexpected and keep an eye on your downwind side anyway. No need to bring the 1911 unless you're worried about 2-legged predators. The .223 and the shotty stoked with #4 buck ought to be plenty. Good luck next week.

Thanks bbg. This morning's hunt was just outside of Aiken. Tomorrow I will be visiting the yotes in Edgefield with a buddy from work. We must be stupid or something. We start night shift tomorrow night and still we're gonna be out hunting yotes at first light. Oh well, I can sleep when I'm dead, right?

Re: South Carolina Coyote Double! My First Yotes!

Good job buddy, I called mine in my first time out and you go out do me with a 2 for 1! I knew the fever was contagious, but you caught it quick lol. I'll have to pick up my hunting activities and scratch two before you get to far ahead.

Better get your hunting boots on if you're gonna catch up

Had a little luck myself this morning. Hunting with a buddy from work. We managed to make two more "good" coyotes. The blond one came in to a Jackrabbit distress call at the very end of a set. Had decided to move and just gave the Jackrabbit a try for the heck of it. Less than a minute later she came charging in. Shot her on the run at around 50 yards just as she was heading back into the woods. On the second set, the black one comes out into the field and holds up at 170 yards in chest high grass/brush. Came to a fawn distress call and decoy. My buddy made a heck of a head shot (that was all he could see)! So we were two-for-two and feeling pretty lucky. Made one more setup down by a pond but had no luck there. I guess two out of three ain't too bad!
