Hope I'm not beating a dead horse here,

Looking for an uber accurate .22 bolt action to use as:
-trainer for new shooters(no need to mimic another weapon)
-good ol' plinking rifle
-occasional varmint hunting, and hunting wabbits (tasty tasty)

I want to mimic the sight set up from my old man's .22. Basically, a good sturdy front sight and an adjustable dovetail mounted just forward of the receiver, and then a "flip over" rear peep sight that can be folded back if you don't want to use it, with good solid "clicks" so that you can adjust for range and wind if you were so inclined. I really have little to no interest in ever putting glass on this, and don't really want to put bipods or much more than a sling on it. *Might* put a can on it someday. Sights need to be sturdy enough to take through the brush when hunting rabbits.

My budget is $500, and would like to have it finished by October or so. So, what model rifle? Sights? Comments/critiques?

I like the ruger 77/22. Very fun gun, Plus there are trigger upgrades available for it. I see a lot of used ones too, which keeps the price ever further down.

The Browning T-Bolt is one of my all time faves for just plane fun. but they tend to be a little pricey unless you find a good deal.

Just for giggles, take a look at the Mossberg 44us series rifles... Sure, they are all over 60 years old, but they came with excellent peeps, factory D&T on most for scope mounting (Havlin Sales has the mounts for under $30 w/ shipping), very accurate, rear sight can swivel out of position with no problem. Well within your budget, with leftover if you want to refinish, etc.

+1
I picked up a M44US from ODCMP.
In "As Issued" configuration and Eley 10x, this rifle one holes it at 50'.
My only critic-Magazines are sometimes hard to find.

Nah, mags are easy to find (ebay, gb, Havlin Sales) but they are *expensive* at 45-50 each.
