Gunsmithing School me on the Rem Model 7 action?

What's the model 7 like for building on? Will it handle a 25" varmint weight barrel ok? Looking at doing a 223 build for myself and came across a model 7 action that's been trued and frankly, I don't know shit about that action. Is the tenon roughly the same layout as a 700? Thinking of possible dropping it in an LSS chassis. What is you guys experience with the little model 7? Thanks.

I think it is more like the XP100 than the 700,,I have three and they only have one rear scope base screw hole,,the newer ones have two so I am not sure,,IDK about how heavy a barrel they will stand but I have had very good luck with the factory Model 7,,my M7SS 308 will hold MOA with the 165 SGK and RL15 and the 6mm Rem 18.5 inch will shoot better than that with 87 Hornadys and RL19,,

I have thought about redoing the 6mm as it has almost 3,000 rounds but I bought it for my wife in `89,,

The model 7 action is approximately a 1/2" shorter on the back end compared to the short action 700.

The rear action mounting screw is small compared to the 1/4-28 used up front.

There aren't many if any options for bottom metal. Don't know if any of the chassis systems get around that problem or not.

PT&G is supposed to be making a bottom metal for them at some point. Also, when I contacted Manners, they said they can inlet any of their stocks for the model 7.

I've got a couple custom Sevens with Micky stocks, but they are BDL style. One has a 26" #3 hanging off it, no problemo...

To echo the above, if you 're looking to run a detach magazine setup under a Seven, you're basically SOL. Although you can find a chassis that will inlet for a Seven, it will be a BDL syle blind magazine feeder. So, until PT&G finally releases a DBM for a Model Seven, you're limited.

Another consideration when building on a Seven, reloads will be constrained in c.o.a.l. length, due to the 'shorter than short' action length. Won't be problem with a .223 though, plenty of room for that case to run heavy bullets loaded long...

I am pretty sure the box length on a seven is the same as a 700. The shortening is on the rear bridge of the rifle. I know the 223 box is the same in both versions which would lead me to believe the 308 box is also the same.

Correct.

Magazine box length in the 7 is exactly the same as the 700 S/A.

McM will inlet the 7 into most if not all of their A series stocks. You can go conventional ADL or BDL configuration.

It only has 100 rounds through it, but I suspect it is gonna be a hammer.

The only reason I used a Model 7 is because I had it sitting around and wanted something a little different than our other rifles. As the 6.5×47L is a pretty short round anyway, the fact I cannot run a DBM on it is not an issue. I use mainly 130 VLD's and jam them .015" and I still have a lot of growing room left.

The difference between the 7 and 700 have pretty much been explained. Yes, Manners and McM does the inlet (my Manners was a very good fit), both Jewel and Timney make triggers (try and find a Jewel Model 7 trigger right now), bottom metal choices is non existent (not a real problem to me as I described), and you don't have a real choice in "tactical" style mounts except for EGW. I find the EGW HD style to be finished well, and I think it works on both 3 and 4 screw actions.
