I'm thinking this probably gets brought up a lot but how about one more time.

In the market for a scope. Have multiple guns that need one, including an AR-10 and a custom bolt gun that's close to being complete. My question is this... do I go with a Vortex PST and have fun with it, or take a bigger hit on my play money and get a Nightforce? I go back and forth with the pros and cons of each.

I've owned some Vortex products (so I have some familiarity) but never a Nightforce (I'm sure they don't have their reputation for nothing).

If I was going to war, I'd want a nightforce. If dabbling in matches at a hobby level, the Vortex is probably a better value if your not a professional shooter. If you have the budget, the Nightforce is peace of mind and great glass. It is nice to know if you have any problems with the Vortex, it is a fast and easy fix on their end without grumbling. From my reading, for most guys the Vortex does 80% of what the Nightforce does for cheaper. But, the Nightforce is more expensive for a reason, it is a higher end scope. Just my 2cents.

I have 2 NF scopes. One is a 5.5-22x and the other is the F1. I love them both. I felt like I was taking a little hit financially with the scope, which lasted up until I got it in the mail. I didn't regret the purchase at all and went on to buy the more expensive F1 after. I'm very-well satisfied.

If I went Nightforce, I'm thinking a zero stop is a must. What about the high speed turret, is that a must? Anyone use the 5.5-22 for hunting? I like having the 22x on the upper end, but 5.5x seems a little high for the lower end for when I find myself in the trees?

The Vortex makes a lot of sense for me right now, but the desire for the Nightforce is strong.

I have a similar problem.
I really want a S&B 5-25 PMII, but no way in hell that I will be able to afford one this year due to buying my AI. Seems like AI's just NEED to have an S&B though.
But then I also really want to get a nice AR, and I could get that AND a vortex 6-24 ffp for about the same money as just the S&B...

If you have the money though, and have no other expensive items you want before you've financially recovered, get the best you can afford.

Like said early in the thread, if you are going to war, go Nightforce. I own both Vortex and NF. The NF is very solid with good glass. The Vortex is pretty solid, might not take a bullet but it is not a flimsy feeling scope. IMO, PST glass is as good as NF but I have never been one to get all crazy about crystal-clear-super-duper-high-defintion-hand-polished-awesomeness- bestest-glass-on the planet. I like mechanically sound with good glass. Vortex is definitely a solid choice for the money. The only thing NF clearly out shines the PST is the zero-stop. However the PST ZS is growing on me. I just bought a new 2.5-10x32mm for a AR-15 build that I zeroed at 50yds. I had a solid brass shim made and hand fit it to my turret. Now I can dial under 2MOA before it stops firmly. This lets me make my corrections from 50-225yds and only be 8 clicks past zero. The Vortex is better then NF in the illumination area. YMMV.
