Rifle Scopes scope covers?

I broke my Butler creek flip up cover 2 days after getting them on my AR. They seem fairly cheaply made. I would really like something more durable. I shoot at the range, and intend to do some tactical LR competitions, and in addition hunt. Any suggestions for scope covers that don't get easily lost and are easy to put on take off, and are durable?

have you looked into Leupold's alumina screw in caps? Quite a bit more spendy than the BC's.

I just looked at some at a show this past weekend, but wasn't sure how they would do in the field (I tend to lose things). I like the ideas of the flip ups as I can't really lose them easily.

I have no experience with them. They claim to be more rugged. They also cost alot more. Try researching them and see what you find out.

I went from bikinis to flip-ups to neoprene and back to bikini covers. What someone needs to do is come out with a padded cordura cover that could accomodate scopes with target style turrets, etc. I found scopecoat to be lacking in that department, the butler creek flip-ups are crap, the bikinis seem to hold up the best and protect the lenses, which is my main concern.

What do you mean the Scope Coat doesn't cover target style turrets?

I have had great success with the above company. They have a loop that secures the cover to the barrel and a tab on the rear you just grab and "sling shot" the cover off in a hurry if need be...

those scopeshieldcover's seem like a pretty good idea, anyone have any thoughts or experiencies negative on the neoprene covers?

@PowderBurns - it seems like scopecoat now offers a cover to handle larger turrets (at lease I think I saw that on the website)

I have been seeing a lot of BC Cap braking, it is sad to see them go down in quality. I have some old BC Caps that are close to or over 20 years old, all the new I have are a fail.

What someone needs to make and sell is some bc style caps that are tough. Plain and simple. I'd pay $20 a cap if i knew they were worth a damn.

The local gun store just started selling the Scope Coat. Bought my second one yesterday. I have a couple Mark 4s and they work great on them. Don't know if they make one big enough for S/B, USO, NF....
Large is all they had in stock, but if they make larger ones, I'll be getting some others. For ~16 dollars they seem to be pretty good.

I also went away from Butler Creek caps. Now have one Scopecoat, and 4 scopeshield alaska covers.

The Scope coat for tall turret scopes is the XP-6 model. It's thicker material.

I actually like these better as they have a loop to keep the cover on the barrel, and come off very quickly as someone above mentioned.

They work on tactical turret scopes too. I have one for a SS 3-9 and SS 5-20, and the new SS 1-6. Take your scope length and round it up to the next highest inch. Now, subtract 1 inch and order that size.

These do the same thing that caps do - protect the glass, but they don't break.

I like the leupold alumina covers, I don't know if they fit other scopes or just leupold. I also like the bikini covers that come with Nightforce scopes, I have a few pairs of BC's but they don't last very long.

Accucover hinges look to be thicker than the Butler Creeks. Also, they fold flat instead of outward, which might be all the difference in the world. I know when I've broken Butler Creeks its because the cap is open and either snags on something or gets smashed on the ground underneath the weight of the rifle.

I haven't tried them in person, but next time my Butlers break I will give them a try.

As someone already mentioned Tenebraex is the way to go. They are the same style as the BC covers, but actually well built. Great covers. Not a lot of people carry them, but you can order directly from Tenebraex.

I got a set of the Leupold aluminum thread on covers and so far have been very pleased. They were a little pricey, but have held up really well. I have broke several sets of the plastic covers but these have lasted several years now under pretty tough conditions. So far, I'm impressed.

Strangely enough, I've had the same set of Butler Creek caps on my Leupold hunting rifle scope for 17 years and they still work great.

I'm on my 3rd one in 8 months on my Vortex Viper PST.

Butler Creek has obviously changed their plastic recipe.


I emailed Vortex about maybe them putting out some Nightforce style bikini caps or something and they replied and said that they had kicked the idea around. Hopefully something will come of it.

My old BC's are great. The last 2 pair that I have purchased in the last year are cheap crap. The bikini type covers that have came with my last 2 NF's work fine but tend to smudge the ocular lens because it's so close to the edge of the outer ring/housing.

I just looked at their website. I like what I see. I can get one for my NF scope, and one for my Eotech. Only thing that concerns me is what thickness do you order?
Which one do you have Mike? I didnt see a price on their website. Is there a Hide member that sell them?

Yes, the problem I had with my BC's was a VERY windy day, and I laid my AR down on the mat and snagged the open cap laying it down. snapped right off.

I looked up the tennebrex and they aren't that expensive ($26), but they didn't seem to have a lot of sizes. But they did have some adaptors - again not a lot, so not sure how well they would fit. I also saw that I think Premier Reticle Scopes come with flip ups?

Anyway, still undecided, thanks for all the replies.

Anyone know where to get a Nightforce bikini cover? I did a search, and a while back people said that Nightforce sold them direct. But I'm not seeing them listed anywhere on their site.

Anybody try one of these? Seems like a gimmick, but also seems to make sense to me.

Would like to hear someone with more experience give their take on the concept.
