Hey guys. Newbie here.
I'm having a 6.5 creedmoor built, this alone was a huge step for me. I've always been a remy 788 Guy. The cm is being built on a savage action. The gun will be used for hunting woodchucks out to 5-600 yrds and for clear cuts deer hunting.

I'm torn on optics. Practicing at 300 with 22-250 the 10x luepold seems under powered. I'm really leaning toward 20x or so. But the cost of these Scopes are insane.
I just want good clarity no parallax issues and easy to dial moa. When talking these powers and money I started looking into ziess vortex uso nightforce ect. But really I can't afford a $1500 scope. Paying for a decent rifle is bad enough.

Can someone point out something that would fit the bill?

I even started considering a vx2 6-8 or Mueller eradicators 6.5-25

Help!

Re: scope for a hunting creedmoor

Vortex PST 4-16 or 6-24. I prefer FFP but that is personal preference. You can probably find them for around $800 if you look hard. It will be money well spent.

Re: scope for a hunting creedmoor

I love a shoot mainly nightforce. Don't tell anyone that I have a vortex viper hs that with dial with the best of them. I have had a couple mark 4 that could not dial as well as my vortex. Roughly around 500 but make sure you get the HS.

Re: scope for a hunting creedmoor

The viper hs do look like they will fit the bill. Just will 16x be enough?

Edit just found out those are 1/2 moa per click?! That's 3" per click at 600 yrds. Granted ill be lucky if my groups hold that well. Is it an issue?!

Re: scope for a hunting creedmoor

I have the 6-24x50 on my precision rifle and never go above 18x when shooting at 1K. My next scope will probably be a 4-16x. You will be fine. I currently have a fixed 10x on my hunting rifle and while not ideal, it works for now.

I think the ideal budget hunting scope for ME is the Weaver 3-10x40 mil/mil that Midway sells for ~$300. 10x is more than enough for 500 yards, which is my personal limit for hunting, and I like being able to dial in mils. One of these days I'll get one...

Re: scope for a hunting creedmoor

I think I'm going to get a viper PST. Learning about the FTP or sfp and the difference between using the mil/mil Scope vs moa I've been so accustomed to.

Re: scope for a hunting creedmoor

Take a look at the Sightron SIII series. Great optics, great tracking, and a great warranty. They're second focal plane so the reticle won't cover your small target at long distances.

Re: scope for a hunting creedmoor

I shot groundhogs for several years as far as 600 and 700 yards with nothing more than a fixed 10X SS10X42. I never had a problem seeing or hitting them. This is just my experience and if you want more power thats up to you.

If you do however get more power make sure the reticle is FFP or it will kill you on a hot day running a high magnification to be able to use the reticle. It's also nice to be able to zoom down and still use the reticle for LR deer hunting since they are a good size target.

For the price of the FFP PST I would get the bushnell elite tactical 6-24 mil/mil with the G2DMR reticle. It's a much better scope than the PST, they have better glass and are more reliable. The G2DMR is also a nice reticle that is fine enough you won't cover a groundhog even well beyond the distances you are talking but not so thin you will lose it in low light.

Re: scope for a hunting creedmoor

Thanks I just want to have a good view of my target but have never shot a high power scope like that.

Ill look into the suggested Scopes. I'm not in a huge hurry just looking to broaden my horizons. Last scope was a vx3 4-14x40. Complaints where the 40mm seems too small. Turrets feel cheap and the duplex left much to be desired. I want a finer aiming point with some holdover hash's for quick work

Re: scope for a hunting creedmoor

I put a vortex pst 6-24 on my savage 6.5 LRP. It will work well fopr what you want. Before i bought this gun I hadn't shot past 200 yds, now I wouldn't thing twice about the ranges your talking about for deer.

Re: scope for a hunting creedmoor

I was in the same position you are a few months ago. Shooting for me has always been about hand guns. The 6.5CM is my first LR rifle and trying to build one without emptying the bank account.

As others have mentioned, Vortex is popular on this forum for a good reason they produce a quality scope. Mine is a PST 6-24x50 SFP, I prefer a fixed reticle since it does't obscure to much of the target at longer distance. To help protect the objective lens, a trip to your local camera store and pick up 52mm UV filter. Install it between the scope and hood, you'll never need to worry about your objective lens getting damaged.

Re: scope for a hunting creedmoor

I just put a Swarovski Z5 3.5-18X44 with the BRH reticle on my Savage Predator Max in 260. It is going to be my backup deer rifle, if it shoots and I can figure out some loads for it.

Re: scope for a hunting creedmoor

The Mueller is junk if you plan on longer range shooting.

You could find a VX-3 that would work. Likewise with a Sightron S-III. The Vortex would be a good option too. If glass quality is a concern don't rule out the Zeiss Conquest.

Re: scope for a hunting creedmoor

The 6.5 Creed Savage LRP and Vortex 6-24x50 SFP would be my dream rifle. Actually, I hope to make it mine very soon!!

Vortex all the way as far as optics. The 6-24x50 is the perfect choice in my opinion for the distances you are talking about. I personally like the higher magnifications to work very specific parts of the targets, and especially for the PDogs.

The 6X magnification will work easily for the shorter hunting distances. Again, I prefer higher magnifications for longer distances. Yes, you can get by with a 10X scope for what you are talking about doing. But with my eyes, I definitely want the magnification option to be there.

Re: scope for a hunting creedmoor

If I was putting together one now on my budget the Vortex PST 4-16 FFP would be my choice. All the options, good quality, best warranty, etc. If SWFA made one an HD in the 4-16 range that might be an option as I currently have the 5-20 HD and it is very nice but the Vortex would be my pick of what is available in that price range.

Re: scope for a hunting creedmoor

I've got a VX-II 6-18x on my .17 HMR. It's honestly too much scope on the low end for hunting. The value of the scope isn't too great either. Five years ago, it was a great scope for the money ($399 then), but the market passed it up. It tunnels really badly making 6x give you the FOV equaling 10x. If you'd be ok hunting at 10x and above, you could live with it. But for closer range it really sucks. I've had trouble getting on varmints under 200 yards.
