Hello all,
It's been a while I last posted here. Been busy with the kid and now she's gone to college and I have some time for me. I need a scope for my short barreled rem 308 that I plan to use for 1000 yard and below for target and some hunting. It is a rem PSS that has barrel shortened to 22" in Mcmillan M40A1 stock. I like to keep it compact and easily maneuverable. Is there a good FFP, mil/mil scope that's durable and compact that's under $1000? I am open to either fixed or variable.
Thank you for your help in advance.

Lots of choices in that range. Do you have a magnification preference, weight, illumination or not?

for a compact hunting scope I've had great experience with the vortex 2.5-10x32. You could also find a lot of used scopes in the $1k range depending on what options you want.

Thanks for a quick reply. I'm looking between 3 -10-16 x fixed or variable with at least 40mm obj. Prefer 30mm tube. I like mil/mil and ffp. It will mostly be used for precision paper punching/steel gong and occasional hunting. I'm not sure if something exists in these specs

I'd take a hard look at the vortex pst line and the burris xtr ii. Both offer a lot of features for the money.

Honestly there are are tons of choices in that price range. Especially if you start looking at the used market.

I agree with the Vortex PST line. Couple friends use them and they have no complaints. It's a good optic for the price point.

The tube and top end magnification are going to be bigger than you specified, but if you can live with the big turrets, the original Bushnell DMR/HDMR models can be had for well below your budget cap. With the newest models coming out now I'd imagine there's going to be some great deals on some of the later models as well.

I have the hdmr that I tried to mount on it and that thing is looks huge on top of my short small action on m40a1 stock. Trying to have that mounted on my other rifle also 308 on m40a3 stock with longer, heavier barrel.
Toting that thing will be a problem while hunting...
anybody has a suggestion for 10x fixed scope?
Thank you again!

You are in the same boat I was a year ago. I couldn't find anything that was around $1k, offered those features and was light/compact. I compromised on the size and got the features I wanted. I ended up getting a great deal here on the hide for a NIB xtr ii which was a bit overkill for my rig but it's been a great performer. No problem seeing my hits on steel at 800 and I've taken deer with it in very low light.

Some day day I'll save up for a March which is the only thing I've found that meets everything I wanted.

Fair enough, as I mentioned, the turrets are comically large for an otherwise small scope. They look like my BEAST and Mk6 had a love child.

you mentioned fixed 10x, have you looked at SWFA? For an affordable scope they get a lot of love and there should be both fixed and variable powers in your price range

I run a 2x10 burris xtr2 that I'm pretty happy with. 34mm tube and 42mm objective mil/mil. Not a light scope as mine weighed in at 29 oz.- not sure if that is important to you or not.

45,

I did not even know the hide existed back in 2005...welcome back and congrats on getting one out of the house and into college. I'm with you on that that.

Viper PST G2 3-15 (features and good reticle)
Nightforce SHV 4-14, F1 (close on used price)
Weaver 3-15, or 4-20 (+price)
Leupold M4 4.5-14, ERT-M5 (+weight/-features)
Luepold VX-3i LRP 4.5-14 (?) (+weight/-?)
SWFA 3-15x42 (+price)
Steiner T5Xi 3-15x50 (used price is fairly close)

Maybe somewhere there is 3-15 type optic comparison and shoot out.

Blessings,

BC

That Natchez weaver is a good deal and I just saw it in another thread but optics planet sig tango scopes with code sig40 are 40% off. The 1699 tango goes to 1019. I think the 3-18 is sort of squat if memory serves me correctly.

I really like my vortex hslr 4-16 for my 308 shorty. Its become my jack of all trades, master of none rifle. It gets the job done inside 600. I love the 1/2 moa elevation and covered windage for a hunting rifle. Its quick to dial. Ffp is nice but I don't know if I even really need it. The reticle gets mighty small on low power in low light.

I bought a used Milquad swfa ss 3-15 ffp for 350bucks. So far I love it
I've killed some coyotes and shot rocks to to 800. Very nice scope for the 350 I payed new they are 700.

I've looked through it along sided the cheap nightforce stuff 1000 bucks whatever middle that is and I can't tell another guy has a older 15 power something nxs. All were impressed with the swfa they're all like how much did that cost. The knobs actually feel pretty goodarn tof everyone wants to crank them . She is always zero on zero and appears to be hitting when cranked up.
the swfa is the only long range scope I've owned I've only looked through the other's. But by looking I think it's good

So far I'm leaning toward XTR 2-10 x 42 mm but the weight of that scope is killing me..
anything else in XTR's price range with 30mm tube and little bit less heavy?
Thank you all for your suggestions so far! Great info and help here!

22 oz is not too bad in the 34mm tube class of scopes. What is the weight you are trying to achieve? Not thinking 34mm is all that necessary for what you are looking to do. Also seems like its kind of low on adjustment for the 34mm, 2-10 configuration? Would a PST gen 1 be of interest?

The reason I'm looking at lower power model is because of the length of the scope. I'd like a compact scope that will go well with a overall length go the rifle and balance well. I'd like to stay around 12" and below but i can compromise with little bit over 13".

I looked at LRHS but that's a little out of my price range
i took a look at Natchez weaver special and it looks good and actually might work for My intended use for this rifle I'm thinking and the price is pretty darn good!
Scope shopping is driving me crazy!
what would be a possible limitation for weaver tactical for my intended use of this rifle-midrange rifle, some hunting, mostly steels and papers, etc.
thanks again!
