Looking for a new scope for work I run a leupold mk4 4-14 on a Remington 700 with a m24 style barrel. Looking for some scope options needing more magnification, 1/4 moa adjustment, price range around 1800 I use this rifle to shoot out to 1000 yards with any advice will be helpful thank you!

Hi,

Where do you work at in regards to "work" rifle for out to 1000 yards? Ranching, Varmint Control, etc etc?

Is the 14x you have now not enough magnification due to vision or needing to ramp up magnification for other reasons?

Are you looking for FFP or SFP?

Do you want MOA reticle to go with the 1/4 MOA adjustments or you want MIL reticle with the 1/4 MOA adjustments?

Sincerely,
Theis

Thank you for replying I’m new here but I’m a sniper on my county’s special response team but I stretch it out to 1000 on my own time the 14 isn’t enough for me past about 700 to pick out Certain targets I’ve always used sfp but I’d like to play around with ffp for work just for the fact that it’s more accurate for ranging off the reticle and I would prefer an moa reticle

Given that you qualify for a LE discount, I would suggest reaching out to Vortex and looking carefully at their Razor Gen 2 4.5-27x56. In terms of bang for the buck, it is hard to beat.

If you prefer to stay with Leupold, there is always Leupold Mark 5HD 5-25x56.

Both are good designs, so I would look at which reticle you prefer. Mark 5 will be a fair bit lighter, if that matters.

I have a Leupold vx6 3-18x44 cds for sale in the classified section if your interested. It’s a great scope and I’ve used it to 1000 and beyond. Asking $1300 for it. 30mm tube moa adjustments and t-moa reticle.

Pricing on the Bushnell XRS2 (4.5-30x) would be excellent, as well. It's not available in MOA, but I think you'll be just as well off with a MIL based scope, assuming other guys in your team are running MIL as well.

Thank you but I was looking for more magnification than 18 where is the classified section like I said I’m new here haven’t navigated the whole site yet lol

Contact NF and submit a request for the MIL/LE Individual Purchase Program. Their discount is where it’s at, if you want new from NF. Otherwise, definitely check out the PX on here for some good deals on various makes/models.

I hear good things about the Vortex Mil/LE discounts as well so check em out. I wanted an ATACR as I’ve always trusted NF for personal and professional use but vortex might get you what you want at your price.

Ranging off the reticle seems cool, but is not only a legacy skill, but problematic on small targets at the longer distances.

FFP is about accurate wind holds, accurate communications and fast accurate holds.

That said, assuming you actually got green lighted on a call, it would not be much further than 100... so a lot of the FFP stuff really doesn’t matter

Where I work at it’s tough to get as close as 100 yards everything I’ve worked has been right around 200+ thanks for the info tho

1800 dollars or 1800 in your countries currency? Any of the big names will do if you have that much money to play with.

His initial post said county, not country.

You’re welcome but I can’t send you the price sheet. Those involved with the NF program are prohibited (per NF’s instruction) from disclosing or sharing the pricing information with others, even if they are coworkers/members of the same unit/dept.

Their individual purchase program people are super helpful and will get your request processed ASAP.

I’ve also heard Leupold does a mil/le discount but never got around to applying so I can’t speak first hand.

Honestly man, ATACR F1 5-25 is where it’s at. I went with the Mil-XT and have zero regrets (it was a deployment gift to myself earlier this year).

If I were you, I’d consider MIL/MIL and FFP. If you’re a sniper for your dept, you can probably count to 10 without the aid of reference, so learning Mils from MOA won’t be a problem for ya. Not a hard thing to learn as long as you filter through some of the nonsense online by shooters who think mils = cm. Frank (LowLight) has the training section on here so if you’re unfamiliar with mils that’s a great place to start, as is the podcast.

Best of luck man and welcome up SH!

Hi,

Have you talked with your department risk management or purchasing office in regards to any requirements your departments insurance policy may have?

Would suck to drop your money to only find out the insurance lawyers will not cover the department if it ever gets used in a callout.

Sincerely,
Theis

Yep, it might be tough, but that’s how it will shake out.

What distance does your team work the dot drills etc? This will give you better idea of the realistic defensible distance you’d ever get green lite.

it is all cool to think LEO is like the early days of Afghanistan but that’s just not the case.. tough or not you will have to be close before you’ll ever press a trigger.

You guys just do not have the training, or even budget for enough ammo to practice enough to ever have legal protection. Chip shots have gone bad in the past.

Yeah all our rifles aren’t agency purchase like all of our other gear they want our rifles to be set up they way we’re comfortable with not just a standard 700 with the same scope across the board which is good

You keep saying "where I work". Do you mind give slight details? Just state is a start, not looking for personal info. Just an idea of local terrain/conditions.

Hi,

Man, that makes absolutely no operation and legal sense at all.

IF you or your Teammate EVER get the go ahead to take a shot and low and behold you/they shoot the wrong person the State investigators and possibly Federal investigators are going to eat that "policy" alive.

Example:
You have moa adjustments and moa reticle
Your partner has mil adjustments and mil reticle
Other partner has moa adjustments and mil reticle

ONE of you is pressed into the shot with the others rifle..spotter calls correction, you..due to "your" setup and training is accustomed to the number being called out as MOA yet the rifle scope you have is mil......trigger pressed...wrong person goes down....

Guess what is coming next!!!!

There is a valid reason things are "standardized" in equipment and training when it comes to LE Departments and such.

Sincerely,
Theis

I agree 100% with you on the legality standards of things every scope we have on the team is all quarter minute reticle and adjustment but there is nothing in our policy about going with a mil scope but like I said I agree with you and I have brought that up because of that exact reason
