On a remmy I use the center of the exhaust port to the center of my rings.

The center of my USO rings are the center of the tube, the rest is close enough for government work...

1. measure the diameter of the barrel directly below the objective lens this = a
2. measure the diameter of the objective lens this = b
3. measure the distance between the bottom of the objective lens and the top of the barrel this = c
scope height = (a/2)+(b/2)+c
NOTE: measuring the distance between the objective and the top of the barrel can be difficult especially with a bull barrel. Typically this method requires removing the action from the stock.
