Scope level question

Probably a stupid question but does it matter where a bubble level is mounted? Ie- on the top rail vs. on the scope tube. My gut says no if the scope is mounted correctly.

That being said, any recommendations on levels? I’m looking at MKM’s rail mounted level and Holland’s signature series.

From a leveling perspective it is easiest to set up a scope mounted level I believe. The process I use is to set up a plumb line at 50 or 100 yards and then align the vertical reticle with the plumb line and have a friend lock the bubble level to the scope. That way the level is perfect when the reticle is perfectly vertical.

Once you have the bubble level straight on the scope, its fairly easy to then level the top rail and lock in the scope rings.

The other advantage of this system is that the scope mounted level will stay true even if you move the scope to another rifle or mount.

I mount all mine to the scope. As Mortalpawn mentioned, once you mount it, it's good to go for any rifle you mount it on. Additionally, I level my bubble level with the reticle lined up against a lubber line while the scope is off the rifle. I find this to be a lot easier than leveling the rifle, level and scope all at once. You can't do that with a rail-mounted level.

Only caveat to scope mounted levels is that you check it periodically. ...as you should be doing every time you do maintenance on your systems.

Depends if you have any natural cant purposely built into your setup.

If so, then you have to use the level on the optic.

If you level the rifle and then the optic to the rifle, it doesn’t matter. As they should both line up. Put it wherever is easiest for you to utilize the level.
