I am waiting on an AI AW 300 win. and want to purchase an AI dovetail mount for a S&B PMll 5-25x56. What MOA mount will I need to be able to shoot at long range to the rifles potential and still be able to return to my zero at 100 yards?

Re: Scope mount for AI AW

5-25 is made for use with the 45 MOA mount, and this will keep you optically centered over a wider range. 28 will also work fine.

That said, if I was getting a new mount, I'd go for one of the new Spurhr mounts in the GB section.

Re: Scope mount for AI AW

I do believe the 28 has to be machined to fit the turret housing, where the 45 does not.

I would also wait for the spuhr mount, if I had time. Having my my AI mount (18 moa) machined for clearance was what I did though.

Doesnt the 45 cost a bit more vs the 28? I went with the 28 and let a buddy machine it for a second, but if you dont know anyone to do this for you and buying new, id prob go with the 45.

Re: Scope mount for AI AW

I believe they are about the same. Close enough that if you had to pay to machine it, you would be better off with the 45.

Not sure but I think you might get a bit of a view effect at closer ranges from the 45 moa mount requiring the scope to be almost bottomed out. This causes it to be low in the tube giving you a black ellipse in the upper portion of the FOV. Don't know what this effect is called, but I'm pretty sure you'd get it with a 45 moa mount.

Re: Scope mount for AI AW

With the elevation travel of the S&B 5-25 and a 45MOA mount, I've never topped it out in a 308 (beyond 1100) or a 300WM (out to 1600) or my 22LR (out to 300). (And yes, you can clearly see 22LR bullet impacts with the S&B at that range.)

You will get a little black at the extreme edges of your travel adjustments with the S&B, but I have never experienced it while shooting the rifle--haven't gotten close.

It isn't an issue. This is a thread for an AI mount. The 45MOA mount does the job best for the application described.

Re: Scope mount for AI AW

^^^I found that I could see the shadowing when the scope was new and I mounted it, but after zeroing with my 18moa mount that was machined to fit the scope, it was no longer an issue. I still have enough elevation to get to the full click value of the the scope (26 mils if my memory serves me correctly?) from a 100y zero, so I don't see where a 45 moa mount would have served me any better.

That being said, the OP did ask which mount, and it is correct that the 45 moa is the correct mount for this application as it does not require machining. I haven't used one so my question was about the shadowing- which is a valid question and concern, because if it were an issue, than there would be better options than the 45 moa.

Thanks,

Re: Scope mount for AI AW

Thanks for the info everybody. will help me out alot.

I have been some research on this topic and no one could really help me out here in Australia. I hope it is worth the wait for the AIAW, for any owners out there how well do these rifles actually shoot?
