Hey guys! My first post, sweet.

I just got a Savage 10 FCP-K. I chose the Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50 PA scope to go with it. I think that should be a good fit for a first timer getting into the sport for under $1500 right?

Anyways my question is about the rail and scope rings. Any recommendations? I'm guessing med height for the rings, but what's up with the MOA choices for the rails?

Re: Scope Mount ring/Rail recommendations

if your shooting a 308 most go with a 20 MOA base to easily get you to 1K yards. the MOA base gives you more elevation adjustment. this is also factored in by how much elevation adjustment your actual scope has. by adding a 20 MOA base it gives you 20 MOA more adjustment up and 20 MOA adjustment down. i have the same scope on my SPS-V and use the Seekins 20 MOA base and Vortex/Seekins medium rings. its a great fit.

Re: Scope Mount ring/Rail recommendations

I'm planning a new target build and I bought a vortex viper pst 6-24x50 scope and I'm going to get an EGW 20moa basse and I bought a pair of 30mm TPS low rings for it. I think it is going to be a great combination, and the tps low rings allow the scope to clear the barrel.

A canted base does not add adjustment to a scope's internal travel, neither up nor down.

What it DOES do is shift your close range zero by 20 MOA up, so you dial the scope down to zero at close range. Then, you have biased the scope travel so that at close range (let's say 100yd) you have only a small amount of adjustment left below, but a lot more adjustment up.

For example: The Viper PST 6-24 has 65 MOA of internal adjustment. Splitting that down the middle, lets assume your 0 MOA base zeros 32.5MOA from each vertical stop.

Now you stick a 20 MOA base on it. It will zero (within some reasonable manufacturing error) at 12.5 MOA from the bottom and 52.5MOA from the upper stop.

The way your statement reads a 20 MOA base magically gives the scope 85 MOA of adjustment, which is not true.

To the OP:

If you want to keep the expenses down, EGW makes a pretty good rail for about $35, especially for a Savage since their external dimension control is much better than Remington's has proven to be.
