Looking for a scope that will balance well for my new Barrett Fieldcraft 6.5. Looking to twist turrets occasionally out to 600-800 for steel and paper. Hunting rig out to 500 for ethical shots. Budget is $500-900. What are you guys running on flyweight rifles? What would you guys choose?

My 5-7lb hunters wear vx3i’s with cds, they’re very light weight, the optics are good enough and Im not spinning the dials like my comp rifles so they work plenty good.

+1 on that. the VX3i would do nicely for what your looking to do. My usual options are vortex/bushnell/leupold/Burris for that price point but I feel like they fit more of the tactical market than light weight hunting.

That’s my concern with Leupy. Love the weight and glass but I’ve heard troubles with tracking and holding zero. Does anybody have the newest release of vx3i’s and and comment on reliability? Anybody using Tract Optics? They seem to check a lot of boxes. Looks like the Tekoa and Toric are made in Japan at LOW.

Nightforce SHV 3-10x42. Or if the taller turrets bother you... Nightforce NSX 2.5-10x32. Both weigh about 20 oz. I had the NSX on a Forbes (precurser to Barret FC) and a 6.5 FC (non threaded). It wasn't top heavy or unbalanced at all.

As a side note... there is a lengthy "discussion" over on the 24 hour campfire forum about Leupolds.

Sounds like the majority of people on the Fire don’t like Leupolds. The VX5hd looks like it ticks a lot of boxes but then it sounds like they are using the same technology on the internals as the lower end scopes, which don’t get high reviews for reliability.

Can you put a dial on the vortex razor UL? I like the reticle and weight of that scope. Just not sure if you have the ability to dial up for shooting steel and practice.

LRHSi 4.5-18 on my 7mm-08 Fieldcraft. Some may consider it overkill, but I respectfully disagree; IMO optics at or around 18x on the top end are very well-suited to general hunting use.

I’ve got a 4.5-18 LRHSi on my 6mm creed Seekins Havak. Amazing scope!! I want to stay lighter than the Bushnell. I found a great deal on a vx5hd 3-15. I’ll see how it feels on the fieldcraft. This rifle is meant for long hikes into canyons and short to medium distance shots. This will be my first leupy and I hope I don’t get a lemon. Does anybody have one on their fieldcraft? I’ll report back after I get her dialed in.

If you dial, SWFA SS scopes are about the only completely reliable solution in your price range. I like SWFA 6x42. Friday sale still going on, so less than $200 for a bulletproof scope that you can dial to your heart's content. Still less than 7 pounds fully loaded.

I actually took advantage of that sale and ordered the 6x42... the VX5HD has been working great so far. I might put the SWFA on to see how I like. How do like the glass quality of the SWFA 6x42?

I'm not an optics expert by any means. But I do have some good glass (binocs, spotter, etc.). The 6x42 has an excellent field of view and is clear. I don't see any chromatic aberration. The eye relief is also very good. Only complaint I have seen, and that I agree with, is that the Mil Quad reticle is pretty fine and might be hard to see in low light. I know guys get great hits in very low light beyond 200 yards just by centering the target in the box defined by the heavy top and side arrows.

I've hunted with a fixed 4X for years (as well as with variable scopes). 6X seems about perfect for me, and I would say out to 600 yards it is just fine for shooting, not spotting. I could see some people having an issue identifying a specific buck in a group at long distances. For my terrain (Lowcountry of SC), I'll take the fixed every time and would also be happy to take it out to 400+ yards. 400 is about my limit of confidence, not the limit of a 6X.

13oz.

I haven't had any issues with CDS dials.
I have had to explain to lots of people how they work, as they didn't understand the ballistics change with weather and were upset the turret they had setup for 3k ft. and 90* didn't work at 8k ft. and 25* during hunting season.

So I tend to take the "it doesn't work" reviews with a grain of salt.

Where at in SC?

SWFA 3-9 if you don’t mind exposed turrets, and don’t mind the lack of parallax. Used this scope this year on my tikka hunting and was happy.

If you have the money and don’t mind capped turrets the 42mm SHV is another I’d consider
