A little background: long time "lurker" here, but not new to shooting. I've been enjoying firearms for the past 36 years. I'm considering scopes for my next rifle. The rifle is a Rem 700 SPS Tactical which I will use to punch paper. Primarily at 100-200 yds, predominately informal shooting with the possibility of some 100-300 (or slightly beyond) matches.
I don't reload, but my uncle does and he and I will normally work up a good round for a given rifle.
I've owned some nice precision rifles in the past, mostly the Rem. 700 type, factory and 1 custom. The most accurrate rifle I owned (hands down) was a Steyr SSG PIIk with the double set triggers and it would shoot holes into dimes @ 100yds (I'd tape them to the target and make key fobs for family). I really wish I'd kept that one; don't remember what I sold it for..
Anyway, due to my budget I am looking at the Leupold Mark 2 4-12x40 and the 6-18x40 in their Tactical line- these have 1" tubes, as well as the SS 10x42 with the side focus.
I generally like the variable Leupold's for their quality and the options a variable scope give. I've owned several (mostly Vari-X II's and III's, nothing super expensive) and they've performed very well.
The Leupolds have a 1" tube, and I'd prefer the 30mm of the SS 10x42, but I'd prefer the variable to the fixed. The SS with rings and base would run me about the same as the Leupold's alone.
So, I'm a bit torn between the two and would appreciate any outside suggestion/observations!
Thanks-
