A little background: long time "lurker" here, but not new to shooting. I've been enjoying firearms for the past 36 years. I'm considering scopes for my next rifle. The rifle is a Rem 700 SPS Tactical which I will use to punch paper. Primarily at 100-200 yds, predominately informal shooting with the possibility of some 100-300 (or slightly beyond) matches.

I don't reload, but my uncle does and he and I will normally work up a good round for a given rifle.

I've owned some nice precision rifles in the past, mostly the Rem. 700 type, factory and 1 custom. The most accurrate rifle I owned (hands down) was a Steyr SSG PIIk with the double set triggers and it would shoot holes into dimes @ 100yds (I'd tape them to the target and make key fobs for family). I really wish I'd kept that one; don't remember what I sold it for..

Anyway, due to my budget I am looking at the Leupold Mark 2 4-12x40 and the 6-18x40 in their Tactical line- these have 1" tubes, as well as the SS 10x42 with the side focus.

I generally like the variable Leupold's for their quality and the options a variable scope give. I've owned several (mostly Vari-X II's and III's, nothing super expensive) and they've performed very well.

The Leupolds have a 1" tube, and I'd prefer the 30mm of the SS 10x42, but I'd prefer the variable to the fixed. The SS with rings and base would run me about the same as the Leupold's alone.

So, I'm a bit torn between the two and would appreciate any outside suggestion/observations!

Thanks-

Re: Scope opinions - Leupold or Super Sniper?

Had both and between the two (MKII and the Super Sniper) I would go with the SS all day, if you were asking about a 30mm VXIII or a MK4, different story. I have and will still use the SS. I also have (that is dedicated to a future build) a Vortex Viper, like Chiller's just sayin', you can not beat it for the money. Even if you pick up the Viper over the Viper PST, it retails at 599, you can find deals for less and there is one on the WTS forum, I think at 475 and that sir is a great deal on a great piece of glass.

Re: Scope opinions - Leupold or Super Sniper?

i sure love my super snipers, but for short /mid range target shootin theres better options...no need for mil dots, etc. if i was building a 300yd bughole maker for all known distance shootin id be on one of the benchrest boards, lookin for something w a target dot or fine wire crosshair.

theres a handful of 10x super snipers in my circle of friends..some have been around 5 years + and they all just plain work.

theres also a few older, like 1970s im guessin or earlier leupys that are real nice. i cant speak for any of the newer ones though

Re: Scope opinions - Leupold or Super Sniper?

Get the SS.......hands down. As War Dog said........you have to compare to the MArk 4 Leo's to exceed what you get with a SS. SWFA will flat out take care of you. If you are on a budget shoot Chris as an email over there tell him you are a hide member and he can often help out with some used products bases, rings etc etc. The SS will just keep running and running.

Re: Scope opinions - Leupold or Super Sniper?

SS over Mark2 leupie I would say. I don't like any of the newer leupolds, they are too expensive for what you get. I really like the older leupi models though, and the warranty makes it a decent used buy.

If you hang out in the for sale section for a little bit I'm sure you'll find a used SS for not a lot of money, I did and it's on my 308 right now.

As far as SWFA goes I dunno, I had a less than inspiring experience with them.

Re: Scope opinions - Leupold or Super Sniper?

Thanks for the thoughts guys.. I appreciate 'em. Hadn't considered a Vortex.. I have no experience with them. Used would be fine with me; I pretty much buy all my firearms used. Have bought used optics too.

Any other opinions?

Re: Scope opinions - Leupold or Super Sniper?

The only thing I can attest to is the quality and customer service that SWFA provides; excellent. There are many that feel the same and why I have done business with them. I own a SS and love it for the function and especially the value.

Re: Scope opinions - Leupold or Super Sniper?

Anybody have one of the original Tasco SS Owner's Manuals or a newer SWFA Owner's Manual for any of of the 10x42 or 20x42 scopes? If so would like a PDF copy.

Re: Scope opinions - Leupold or Super Sniper?

I've had a Leupold since 01 that I've never had any problem with. Great scope. I have also owned the SS and a PST and like both but ended up selling them. The SS was on a setup similar to yours and always held zero and I thought the glass was great for the money.

Re: Scope opinions - Leupold or Super Sniper?

i have used older leupy's wearing stony point turrets do good effect for some limited purposes. i think theyre awesome for the price. ss is good in the fixed 10 but a little much for most my chores.
