Okay guys...I know this isn't exactly a "precision rifle" optics questions, but here goes:

I am in need of some scope options for a big game rifle. The rifle is a Ruger No.1H chambered in .458WM. I am looking for something with variable magnification with a true 1x low end and max magnification of 4-5x. Because of the recoil on this rifle, it needs to be a scope that is up to the job. Also, eye relief of at least 3.75-4" would be preferable.

Taking budget out of the equation for now, what are some quality scopes options for this rifle and why?

Hopefully some of the others will jump in here, too.

I'd consider:

Kales
Swarovski
Schmidt und Bender
NightForce
US Optics
Zeiss/Heinsoldt

Something in a 1-4 variable, or a fixed power no greater than a 4X.

Large field of view, good clarity, simple/useful recticle, absolute/utter dependability.

Put on a damn good set of iron sights in case you need 'em, too.

for game that calls for a 458? first get your open sights properly regulated, then get quick detatch scope mounts. I like a post on a 458, with a pre-zeroed backup in the same design rings (I have old post weavers for my 458). Re whats available now days? the 1.5-5 VX3 leupold is popular with dangerous game hunters, plenty of eye releif.

Re: Scope Options for Big Game Rifle

Hey guys. I appreciate the responses so far.

The rifle has an excellent set of irons that are zeroed in and ready to go. They are just the factory Ruger sights, but are very well-made, durable and they do the job. I got the rifle a while back and have been shooting it exclusively with irons since then (approx. 250 rounds down range at this point).

As for the scope...I have been looking at the following, but am not limiting options at this time in no particular order:

1) Nightforce Compact NXS 1-4x24 with the NP1 reticle;
2) S&B Zenith 1.1-4x24 #7 reticle; and
3) Trijicon Accu-point TR24 1-4x24 with German #4 reticle.

I am afraid I don't know much about the options from Kahles or Swarovski...anybody have any specific models or know where to find out where to buy these scopes? I need to do some more reading.
