Rifle Scopes scope ring position

does it matter where you place your scope rings? close to the turrets, close to the front and rear objectives? in the middle? close to the front, far from the rear, or the opposite etc etc?

for now i have a vortex viper pst 6-24x50 FFP riding a 5R 308 20" in a manners T3 with a mini chassis.

i did take a trade on a vortex razor 5-20x50 that i should have next week.

if i don't like the razor, i am seriously considering a night force or S&B FFP.

this is not a scope debate. i mentioned the scope i have now and will be getting next week as a reference in case it might matter.

For the most part you want the scope rings as far apart as you can get them. This becomes more important with a heavy scope or on a hard recoiling rifle.

Good choice on the scope. I center my rings in the scope tube. Not too close to the turrets or out towards ocular or objective. Always worked fine for me.

for one, if the scope creeps any, you'll see it without it bumping up against anything. (a piece of electrical tape wrapped on the tube bumped up against the ring will tell you quickly if it's sliding).

for two, the ocular, adjustment, or objective housings where it connects to the main tube is the weakest points, at least from what i've heard and read.

so as far as i can get them apart, without getting too close to either of the housings. usually adjustment (turret) housing to the ocular is split in the middle, forward of the adjustment housing i like to keep it at least an inch away from the objective bell.

My mark 4 M2 on my MK12 has one of the rings almost touching the base where the turrets bevel off. I've never had a problem with it. Though i'm like Rob i like my rings about equal distance from the turrets.
